As the dog days of summer set in, employers should make sure their workers aren’t sliding into a summer slump.

Some companies are ahead of the curve by offering unlimited paid time off to their employees, an appealing benefit that will help organizations attract top talent and keep their current workforce refreshed and rejuvenated.

While unlimited PTO is an in-demand perk, getting employees to take advantage is a different story. Even at pre-pandemic levels, just half of all available PTO was usedby employees. This has only been exacerbated throughout the pandemic, as employees are routinely staying home, working longer hours and suffering from high rates of burnout and stress.

“People are really emotional about not being able to take trips and use their vacation the way they want — it’s causing a sense of disenfranchisem*nt,” said Jackie Reinberg, national practice leader of absence management at Willis Towers Watson, an advisory firm. “It’s really important for their overall well-being to take that time to recharge.”
