My Airbnb Lakehouse Makeover: Week #3

Welcome back toPostbox Designs, E-Design! While you will normally find me sharing my client projects from all over the country over here, you’re hanging out here on a different week. I’m participating in theOne Room Challenge: a six week challenge where designers from all over the country makeover rooms at the same time. And believe it, it definitely has kicked my rear end into gear for several projects in my own home! And for this round, I’m tacking our family’s Lakehouse….five rooms in all!

About two years ago, my family bought a 1,200 SF Lakehouse on an All Sports Lake near our home here in Michigan. While the location was perfection…the inside was not. We went the first summer just enjoying the water, and didn’t do much to the interior of the Lakehouse. However, now I had a whole winter to think about how to make-over the interior of this cottage…and it is time to go!

If you missed the first few weeks, you will want to check them out! Why?

Because every week I’m sharing a FREE Room Design + Shopping List for each room I’m tacking during our Lakehouse Makeover: a total of 5 Rooms in all!

Week #2: Grab the Free Kid’s Hang Out Room Design

Our cottage has three bedrooms, and the largest one was upstairs. Instead of using it as a Master Bedroom, we decided to turn it into a shared bedroom for our three kids (two girls and a boy). Here is the space we are starting with:

The Existing Kid Bedroom Space:

But don’t be deceived…the room really isn’t all that big. And I’ll tell you-the room has given me the biggest headache of all of the rooms in this whole Lakehouse! My original plan was to put bunkbeds in this room. But between the ceiling height, sloped ceiling, and window/door locations…that plan wasn’t going to work. After measuring the space again and again, I decided to use three twin beds right next to each other.

I wanted a Shared Kid Bedroom that was gender neutral, had a coastal Lakehouse vibe, and was super budget friendly. This is my kid’s bedroom after all…they aren’t going to be spending a lot of time in here! And I can count on wet swimsuits and sand to be part of the deal.

I wanted to start by getting some design inspiration. I even created a “Cottage” Mood Board on my Pinterest page.

(P.S. In fact, if you are looking for room inspiration, I have a board for every room of the house on my ownPostbox Designs Pinterest Boards

Lakehouse Shared Kid Bedroom Inspirations

I loved this image for its nautical red, white, and blue decor in this shared bedroom space:

I loved this image for its cottage look, and this gender neutral space would work for boys and girls alike:

I liked the subtle nautical elements in this shared kid bedroom: the rope mirror, navy beds, rattan, and simple blue & white theme:

And finally, this shared kid bedroom is a little more modern than the look I’m going for, but I love how she incorporated nautical elements in a non-cheesy way:

After about two weeks of measuring, re-measuring and scouring different sources, I finally came up with a plan to tackle this Shared Kid Bedroom design. I am using a color palette of navy, white, and teal for the this bedroom for my three kids. I wanted to add in some fun, charming water inspired elements like this shark (#7) and artwork (#6).

And the best part: this Shared Kid Bedroom design is all really budget friendly.

Nearly every item you see is from places like Target, Etsy, and Homegoods. And to make this very small room look larger, I decided to do identical beds and bedding for each kiddo.

And I do also want to fill you in on the same progress we are making downstairs!

Airbnb Lakehouse Downstairs Progress: Week #3

So while I was coming up with a design for our upstairs Kid Bedroom, there is some major progress going on downstairs. We have ripped open our downstairs Living Room and Dining Room, and I have some “during” progress to share with you.

Project #1: Adding New Lighting

The big updates to share this week involves…Lighting!

In the Living Room area we installed these simple, inexpensive cage light fixtures. In the Dining Room, we installed this new metal chandelier. (You can grab the links for all of my lighting in the “Lakehouse Living Room Shopping List”, which is hanging out in myFREE RESOURCE LIBRARY

We also added some simple insulation to the Dining Room ceiling before the new shiplap ceiling comes up in that room.

(And like every pup, our Labradoodle Jasper wanted to be in on the action-you can see him below)

Project #2: Adding Board and Batten to the Walls

One of the unique things about our Lakehouse, was all of the walls in the Living Room were plywood. So even when they were painted, they had a cheap looking vibe to it I didn’t like. But there was no way we wanted to tackle all new drywall. So instead I came up with the idea to “fancy up” our plywood walls:

We added “batten” vertical strips to all of the walls in our Living Room and Dining Room. As a bonus, we purposefully placed some of these battens to cover up the gaps between plywood boards! Then we will paint everything white.

Plus, since we exposed the ceiling in the Sunroom-turned-Dining-Room, we are planning on installing shiplap on the ceiling. All of the ceilings and walls will be painted in Benjamin Moore’s “Simply White”. We are also going to paint all of the wood trim around the windows in white as well. The hope is it will give a bright, clean look to the space, and help bring some unity to the rooms.
