Melbourne's richest and poorest suburbs: How does your area compare? (1)

Toorak has long been known as the home to Melbourne's rich and famous, the well-to-do, the ladies who lunch.

But it's not the wealthiest, according to new census data.

Melbourne's richest and poorest suburbs: How does your area compare? (2)

Toorak has a large proportion of retired people and as a result it has lost its most-wealthy tag to up-and-coming nearby East Melbourne, according to our statisticians.

The Bureau of Statistics' index of advantage and disadvantage is based on a mix of household income and occupation, so the retired old money of Toorak is outranked by the busy professional cohort of East Melbourne.

On the flipside, the state's most disadvantaged suburb is Broadmeadows, followed by Corio and Campbellfield.

Most of the richest and poorest areas are largely what you would expect, but the census data also shows which areas fall somewhere in the middleof the advantage-disadvantage scale. They include Sunbury, Langwarrin, Mornington, Ringwood, Cheltenham, Preston and Pascoe Vale.

Government departments, town planners and social researchers often use this Index of Relative Socio-economic Advantage and Disadvantage (IRSAL) to identify areas of need.

But the data can be cut up in other ways.

On Tuesday, the ABS singled out how it showed how people born in China predominantly live in advantaged areas of Australia, while those from Vietnam are concentrated in comparativelydisadvantaged suburbs.

Melbourne's richest and poorest suburbs: How does your area compare? (3)

Our own analysis of the data shows more than a third of Chinese-born residents in Victoria live in areas that are ranked in the top 20 per cent of suburbs when it comes to advantage.

Demographer Glenn Capuano of consultancy .id said those born in China tended to flock to wealthier areas of Melbourne's east such as Glen Waverley and Box Hill, which often have good schools.

But more than a third of Victorians born in Vietnam live in the most disadvantaged10 per cent of suburbs.

Mr Capuano said people born in Vietnam had settled in areas such as Sunshine and St Albans, which have traditionally had higher levels of disadvantage. He stressed there was not a cause and effect relationship between birthplace and disadvantage.

Among people born in Australia there is a relatively even distribution between people living in disadvantaged or more well-off areas.

Mr Capuano said the index was useful because it compiled a variety of different demographic features that helped define whether an area was considered advantaged or disadvantaged.

"The data quantifies what we may already feel for a place," Mr Capuano said. "But its advantage is being able to summarise a number of characteristics."

This map shows the most disadvantaged areas of Melbourne in red, and the most advantaged areas in blue.

When it comes to the inner city, as you can see there is a sea of wealthy blue suburbs, particularly in the inner east.

And there are pockets of red disadvantaged areas on Melbourne's fringe, in suburbs such as Dandenong and Broadmeadows.

If you zoom in, you might be able to discern some purple areas such as Clayton, Whittlesea and Bayswater, which fall somewhere in the middle of the income scale.

Mr Capuano said these were the sorts of places you could categorise as "lower middle class".

When we zoom out in the map below, you will see how relative levels of disavantage increase once you move further from the CBD.

Use the zoom controls on the map to see how your area compares.
