Now you are at the most important step, renunciation of Malaysia Citizenship. I guess this is the step that worries most people. At least that was how I felt. No worries, today you are lucky because I am going to show you step by step to submit your renunciation application. 😁

If you are happen to stop by my website but you have not reach the step of Malaysia Citizenship Renunciation yet, then you may want to read my previous post on:

Make an Appointment

Due to covid-19 pandemic, visiting the High Commission of Malaysia, Singapore is strictly by appointment only. You can make your appointment via email to the consular section at consular@mhc.org.sg . Remember to attach the approval letter to show that you are at the final stage of Singapore Citizenship application.

A piece of advice here, you should make your appointment as soon as you complete the Singapore Citizenship Journey stage. This is to avoid any crashing to your scheduled appointment date to ICA for citizenship registration. I was caught into this date crashing situation. 😓

For my case, I sent an email to the Consular section to make an appointment on 22 July 2020 and I got the reply on the same day. However, the appointment date I got is on 28 August 2020, which is way behind my appointment date to report to ICA, on 17 August 2020.

Without further delay, I quickly wrote an email to ICA (ICA_Citizenship_Unit@ica.gov.sg) to request an extension to my appointment. Luckily, I received the reply from ICA (three days later) that my appointment is rescheduled to 07 September 2020. It was really a big relief to me when I saw that email! 😅

Please make your appointment earlier to avoid situations like me!

Required Documents

When the High Commission of Malaysia replies to your appointment date, there should be a checklist attached together for the required documents. Alternatively, you may visit the High Commission of Malaysia, Singapore website for the required documents list.

Please take note that the photocopy and photo booth services are not available at the premises during Covid-19 period. So, make sure you get ready for all the required documents beforehand.

On the Submission Day

Final checking before you depart:

  • Make sure all documents are in place.
  • Print out a copy of your appointment email for exchanging the entry pass. Softcopy on your mobile phone is acceptable too.
  • Bring along a black ink pen.

When you are at the entrance of the Malaysia High Commission, proceed to the security hut to exchange your entry pass by showing your appointment email to the security guard. Then you can proceed to the consular section. In the consular area, you should see an officer sitting next to the queue ticket machine. Tell the officer that you are here to renounce your citizenship and he will give you 2 forms, Borang-K and MY-RN1.

Below is a sample of Borang-K for your reference.

Malaysia Citizenship Renunciation - Xiong Diary 雄日记 (3)
Malaysia Citizenship Renunciation - Xiong Diary 雄日记 (4)

Fill out the forms carefully with black ink pen. Once completed, hand back the forms to the officer for verification. If you do everything correctly, the officer will give you the yellow colour original Borang-K. Fill out the same information as you did earlier. Remember to use a black ink pen.

Once again, hand back the completed yellow Borang-K back to the officer for verification. If you have done it correctly, the officer will ask you for all the required documents and clip them together for submission. Lastly, the officer will issue you a queue ticket. Sit back and wait for your number to be called.

Proceed to the counter when your number is called and submit all the required documents. Then sit back again to wait for your number to make payment. The payment amount is S$10. Make sure you prepare the exact amount in cash. They only accept cash and no change.

Collection Slip

After the payment, you will receive a collection slip. This is for you to collect the MY-RN1 form after 3 working days between 2:30pm to 4:00pm. You can find the collection date on the collection slip too and you don’t have to make an appointment for the collection.

I collected my MY-RN1 form on 01 September 2020. The process is fast, within 15 minutes. Keep the form properly because you will need it for the registration of Singapore Citizenship at ICA. As for the Borang-K, the approval process takes about 8 months time. You will receive a letter from the High Commission of Malaysia, Singapore when it is ready for collection.

Alright, after this stage you are all set and ready for the next step, Singapore Citizenship Registration and take the Oath of Renunciation.

Closing Words

I was so puzzled when I was at the stage of Malaysia Citizenship Renunciation. It felt like a bit helpless 😞. Thus, I decided to note down and share my experience. I hope my sharing is able to help you somewhere. Lastly, thank you for stopping by my website and stay tuned for my next blog post on “Singapore Citizenship Registration and take the Oath of Renunciation”.

Hi Jasmine, you won’t be getting back your Malaysia passport and IC after the citizenship renunciation. You will only be collecting back your birth certificate and Borang K in about 6 to 8 months.
Thanks for stopping by my website and I hope my post could help you.

          Hi Wilsia,
So far, I have not heard of anyone feedback that no response from the MHC on the email appointment. However, if you ever caught into this situation, below are some suggestions in my opinion you might try.
First, check twice to make sure you type in the email address correctly when making the appointment via email. Check the SPAM mail folder of your mailbox to make sure you don’t miss any incoming email. Alternatively, you may call the hotline 68876231 or 68876230 for assistance. Worst case scenario, you might need to drop by the MHC. This would be the last resort.

            Hi Sia,
You may send a follow up email to MHC to follow up your appointment. If you still don’t get a reply from MHC, I would suggest you drop by MHC to find out more. This is the last resort.

Hi CH, thank you so much for sharing your experience. I lost my original birth certificate but have photocopies of it. Do you think I will encounter issue when submitting my renunciation of Malaysian citizenship? My ICA appointment is scheduled on 26 Aug and the lost of BC is really bothering me.

        Hi Ms Fong,

Thank you for stopping my website. I am glad that my blogs do help you. 🙂

In my opinion, you should keep your Malaysia saving account. It will come very handy when you need to transfer fund to your family members or make payment for your bill incurred in Malaysia. It is not easy for a foreigner to open a bank account in Malaysia.

I am not sure about the EPF withdrawal process, but I do not think you can do anything before you renounce your Malaysia citizenship. You may refer to KWSP website for details. https://www.kwsp.gov.my/member/withdrawals/full/leaving-the-country

    Hi,
Can I ask for the registration of Singapore Citizenship at ICA, it states that it needs “documentary evidence to prove that you have renounced your Malaysian citizenship”?
Does it require only the MY-RN1 form (collected after 3 working days from the appointment), afterwards I can head straight to ICA for registration of Singapore Citizenship?
Or do I have to wait another 8 months for the Borang-K, then I can head to ICA for registration of Singapore Citizenship?
    Thank you….

      Hi Michelle,
When you make an appointment to the MHC, you need to attach your final approval letter from ICA to prove that you are at the final stage. Perhaps, you might give it a try to see if they accept in-principal approval letter. However, you should NEVER renounce your citizenship until received the final approval from ICA.

          Hi Hong,
I presumed that you applied your Singapore citizenship as a family unit together with your baby. If this is the case, then you don’t have to do anything about the Malaysia citizenship of your baby. Renunciation is only applicable if your children are 21 years old and above at the time of registration for Singapore Citizenship.
Once you have completed your registration for Singapore citizenship and oath taking of renunciation, you and your family are officially a Singaporean. You will receive your Pink IC and certificate of Singapore Citizenship during the ceremony. As for children, you can collect their certificate of Singapore Citizenship 2 working days later.
Also, you may apply for a Singapore passport the next working day. However, for children, you have the option to continue using their Malaysia Passport with the endorsem*nt from ICA. For me, I applied a Singapore passport for my children, and I don’t intend to use their Malaysia passport.

          • HongFebruary 14, 2022

            Hi Hiong,

Wish you and family a great Tiger year!
Your blog has helped me a lot, and i believe a lot of other Msians who turning into SG citizen. I just want to update you with my situation so that you may continue to share and help other Msians who are getting the SG citizenship.

I had gotten my final approval early this year, and went ahead to request my renunciation with MHC, however the earliest given was more than 4 months later – which means my child will be over 1 year old by then, and i might missed out some benefit of the child being Singaporean before turning 1 year old.

Hence I called ICA to check with such situation and ask if i might go ahead to register the citizenship of my baby first while i am waiting for my renunciation. To my surprise, the officer who answered my call asked me to go ahead to ICA for registration of citizenship as the given appointment date. Please print the email from MHC regarding the date given for the renunciation. And i registered successfully with that printed email as proof – ICA will then adjust the timeline for me to email the copy of the MY-RN1 form after the renunciation (7 days after the given date); and subsequently 7 months period for me to submit the Borang K.

There is also a change on Singapore IC collection, nowadays they allow collection 2 weeks after the registration – reason being the ceremony schedule has now been filled up more than 6 months ahead, so ICA decided to issue the IC first, and only certificate of Citizenship to be issued during the ceremony.

**Also for baby below 1 year old (i am not sure exact cut off of age, so i assumed) as my case, the baby does not need to be present at ICA during the registration, and i have gotten her certificate of the citizenship on the very same day.

I hope this information may help other nervous Msians whose renunciation appointment are given few months later after the request.

A small foreseeable problem might be – the use of Singapore passport. During the registration of citizenship, it is explained that i am already officially Singaporean and i cannot use my MY passport anymore, so i have applied for my SG passport and will collect it end of month. I expect kind of explanation might be required, shall i cross the border to Msia in the coming weeks before I renounce my MY citizenship. only times will find out.

Hi Hiong, I am actually trying to speak to Hong but don’t know how to reply directly to him/her so I’m replying to the conversation thread.

We also are awaiting to renounce our citizenzhip with the Malaysian High Comm but the earliest date given is in May. The issue is, our 2nd baby is about to delivered around the same time.

I am wondering if as a family we can go ahead with our ICA appointment first say in April with an email from MHC saying the earliest appointment for renunciation is in May.

We have considered other alternatives such as going to Kuala Lumpur to renounce but returning might be an issue as we would no longer have our passports.

          • Kwah Choon HiongPost author | March 6, 2022

            Hi Gary,
For Hong, she called ICA to explain her situation before heading down for registration. I think you should do that too. Please call ICA to explain your situation before heading for your registration.

            Hi Hiong,

Glad to see your post and I m surprised to find the comments from Hong as I m having the same situation right now. I informed ica my appointment for embassy is in May where the ica dates are not open yet for citizenship registration. To my surprise, ica informed me to register before renouncing which is really a bonus to me! Since more VTL tickets are open now , I actually have question to Hong if he successfully travel back to Malaysia with SG passport before renouncing?

          • Kwah Choon HiongPost author | March 15, 2022

            Hi Wan Yin,
Let’s assuming that you have gotten your Singapore passport, my thought is that you should be allowed to travel to Malaysia as a Singaporean. In any case, you might want to call ICA to clarify.

          • WenJuly 8, 2022

Hi Kwah, I also am puzzled by this. If a family apply for Singapore citizenship when the kids are below 21 years old, then in the eye of the Malaysia Government, the kids are still Malaysian as they have not done an official Malaysia citizenship renouncement, isn’t it? So by that logic, don’t the kids need to do an official Malaysia Citizenship pronouncement when they turned 21 yrs old?

As me and my family (incl my kids) are now already holding Singapore passport and I am wondering if I still need to apply for my kids a Malaysia IC & renew my kid’s Malaysia passport to not, in order to use these documents (M’sia IC & Passport) to do a successful M’sia Citizenship pronouncement.

          • Kwah Choon HiongPost author | July 13, 2022

            Hi Wen,
You children need to take the Oath of Renunciation, Allegiance and Loyalty (ORAL) after turning 21 and before their 22nd birthday to retain their Singapore citizenship. https://www.ica.gov.sg/reside/citizenship/minor-oath-taking
Therefore, they need to renounce their Malaysia citizenship when turning 21.

My son is 11 years old this year, I am not sure if I need to apply the Malaysia IC for him too, but I think I will do so. I will share more on this.
However, it should not be a problem to do the renunciation regardless of if my son has a Malaysia IC. If he has a valid Singapore Citizenship certificate that should fine. Anyway, this is my opinion.

          • WeiDecember 9, 2022

            Hi Hiong and Hong,

I got my in principle approval in early Nov, but will only complete the citizenship journey next week since the booking for Singapore discovery is quite far ahead. My baby would be turning 1 yo by end of January. May I know if I should call ICA to speed up the process? Not sure what would I miss out if baby or me is getting the citizenship after he turns one. Can you please advise me?

And also we will be traveling home for cny since the tickets were booked few months ago? How’s the timeline wise if I complete my citizenship journey next week. Should I do the renunciation before cny? Or it’s better to be after cny? But I’m not sure if we can get the passport before cny.

Thank you so much for your help!

For travelling back to Malaysia for CNY, my opinion is that do not rush and cramp everything together. Please plan the schedule carefully and find out the lead time for below:
            a. Renunciation of Malaysia citizenship at MHC.
            b. Appointment at ICA for Singapore Citizenship registration and oath taking.
            c. Singapore passport application.

If you applied the Singapore Citizenship as a family unit together with your daughter, she should be holding a Singapore Citizenship status now. Hi, in the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia, one of the documents needed to be submitted for the renunciation of citizenship is the “original Malaysian Birth Certificate to be laminated before submission”- the word laminated is bolded and underlined. Does it really have to be laminated? My original has always been placed in this plastic pouch (which I think a lot of us have) I’d need to know so I can prepare all the documents nicely without being turned away.. haha. Thanks

Yes, you MUST laminate your birth certificate. Strictly follow all the requirements and instructions listed on the website and everything should go well.

Your birth certificate will be returning to you together with the Borang-K. It usually takes about 6 to 8 months.

I grew up in Sg and will definitely be stumped by the form.

I have a question. For the Letter of Approval from ICA, it is specified “original + 2 photocopies”. The letter is downloaded from ICA website, no “original” to begin with. Was it the same for you? The copies printed from computer is fine right?

    Thanks in advance!!

      Hi CC,
That is fine. However, very high chance that MHC might not be able to accommodate to your request for dedicated date. You might get a date later than your appointment with ICA. If this is the case, then you can reschedule your appointment with ICA. You can do it either via ICA e-service portal or send an email to ICA_Citizenship_Unit@ica.gov.sg.

      Hi Wong,
My understanding is that you will still own your properties after you change your citizenship. Borang-K is the document that proves your ex-citizenship identity. If you want to sell your properties, you need the Borang-K to prove your identity and ownership. Same case to your bank account.
Please also do your own due diligence to find out more from a lawyer.

      Hi Penglee,
Just to make thing clear. You need an appointment for your citizenship renunciation at MHC. During the renunciation process, you will be given the MY-RN1 and Borong-K to fill out.
After you have completed the renunciation process, you will be given a collection slip to collect your MY-RN1 form 3 working days later. For that, you don’t need an appointment.
For Borang-K, it will take 8 months or more to process. You will receive a letter from MHC to collect your Borang-K when it is ready. For that, you also don’t need an appointment.

So, when renounce, u give up your MY IC and Passport, means no travel.
Wait 3 days get MY-RN1 and then head to ICA for SG Registration, Next day, apply SG Passport which will arrive in 1 week then can travel?
Pink IC only given at Ceremony later with SG Citizen certificate. Will Digital Pink IC be visible on Singpass app days after registration?
Oh, i noticed the Malaysian Renunciation documents did ask for SG Citizen Certificate which is odd since we don’t get it yet.

      Hi Chua,
1.Yes, you can’t travel. You will be holding no passport during the process of renunciation Malaysia citizenship and Singapore Citizenship registration.
2.Yes, Pink IC will only be given during the Ceremony.
3.I am not sure how long it would take for the digital Pink IC to show on Singpass. You might want to check with ICA.
4.The Singapore Citizen Certification is required for minors who obtained Singapore citizenship by descent or registration. They must take the oath of renunciation and renounce their foreign citizenship after turning 21 and before their 22nd birthday to retain their Singapore citizenship.

      Hi Mandy,
The Letter of approval is referring to the letter that stated you are in the final stage of your Singapore Citizenship application process. You should receive an email from ICA after you completed your Singapore Citizenship Journey. In the email, there will be a link for you to check your application status. You can download the letter using the link.
Alternatively, you can logon to ICA eService or MyICA portal (https://eservices.ica.gov.sg/) to download the letter.

You can also email MHC (consular@mhc.org.sg) to ask about the process of citizenship renunciation for minors who turning 21 years old. They should be able to advice you the required documents for that process.

As the requirement is to have either one of the required documents. I am not very sure on this matter though. You might want to send an email to consular@mhc.org.sg to clarify this.

      Hi Kristine,
It’s not compulsory to do that. However, you should plan properly before making any decision. Below are two points you might consider:
      1. Are you planning to buy an HDB? (Singapore ruling required you to dispose all private properties including oversea properties)
      2. Selling Malaysia property after renunciation of Malaysia citizenship might subject to foreigner tax. I do not have the details; you might need to find out.

    Hi Hiong

    Thanks for your useful info.
My daughter turning 21 years old this year February 2022 and we received a letter from ICA on Oath of Renunciation. There was a statement mentioned that my daughter is required to take the Oath of the Renunciation within 12 months on attaining the age of 21 years. On top of that, it also reminded to take the Oath within a year ‘xx/02/2022 and xx/02/2023’. Does it mean that my daughter has to renounce her Malaysian citizenship then she can make an appointment with ICA to take the Oath?

I had sent an email to HC, the consular has replied on the next day and request for final stage of ICA letter or Oath of Renunciation letter for verification purposes. I did reply to the email and attached with the letter to them. They mentioned the slots are filled until end Jun 2022.
Hopefully I can receive their reply and provide the appointment in July 2022 soon.
Am I missing something above? Hope you can give me some advice. Thanks in advance.

Honestly, I do not have experience on the process of oath taking for minors. However, based on my research, yes, you must renounce your daughter’s Malaysian citizenship first before proceeding to the Oath taking process. You may check ICA website on the requirements too. https://www.ica.gov.sg/reside/citizenship/minor-oath-taking
As for the appointment for MHC, I suggest you send a follow up email to MHC periodically to get an appointment date. Anyway, this is my personal opinion.

You would need to head to the Malaysia’s office in JB to apply for renunciation. This is my situation as well. My parents are both Malaysians, but I’m born in Singapore but hold Malaysian citizenship as well.

          1. Head to Malaysia High Comm in SINGAPORE
          2. Let them know you don’t have Malaysia IC and Citizenship Certificate. They will pass you a slip of paper with the Malaysia’s office and opening hours.
          3. Find a day to go Malaysia’s office, I went on Sunday at 7am lol to not queue. Bring all your documents.
          4. They will direct you to a smaller “office” to renounce your citizenship and sign some forms and fill in personal particulars
          5. After everything is done, wait for Malaysia’s office to call/email you to go back Malaysia’s office and finalise the process. (I’m at this stage now, waiting for them to call me, I went in Jan 2020)

Would be good to bring someone who speaks Malay (or if you speak Malay that’s great too) cuz the staff there cant speak English for nuts.

    Thanking in advance.

    Hi there,

Just an update, ICA no longer allow the citizenship registration without renunciation as previously mentioned by some commenters. Will have to reschedule the ICA registration date accordingly (which is quite a while from now as the next slot available at MHC is in July 2022). Hope this helps.

Yes you can go in Msia with your SG passport, which i did in March via VTL, and i am only going to renounce my citizenship in coming week.
Only ‘different’ was i been re-directed to another special counter for further verification before they put a stamp on my passport at M’sia immigration. However no question was asked for my case.

Just to share with everyone my recent experience. ICA gave me an exception to take the oath of renunciation and to register my SG citizenship before surrendering my Malaysian citizenship. My appointment with MHC is in June while ICA was in April.

With the SG citizenship registration completed, I collected my pink IC recently and applied for my passport as well which I will be collecting end of May.

However, one important thing to note is that you have to sign a letter of undertaking that you will provide the MY-RN1 and Borang K once you have renounced your Malaysian citizenship.

      That’s great information.
May I ask – how did you manage to get this exemption to register SG citizenship prior to renunciation? Was it just for you or yours was a family application as well? (i.e. spouse, children and you).
We have been trying to fix an appointment for my wife and I at Malaysia Hi-com but they have written back to us to try contacting them again in June as all the slots are taken from now till end June. After that, I have contacted ICA to ask for the same for my family application. However, they have politely declined us.
      Hope you can enlighten us.

So sorry for the late reply.
The exception was provided to me by ICA. I didn’t request for it.

I mentioned to them that MHC could only give me an appointment date that was much later than ICA’s. I provided them with MHC’s email as proof.

The exception was for my family and I.

If I were to renounce my citizenship in Malaysia, I believe they will take back my Malaysia Identification card and my Malaysia passport. Without my passport, I don’t think I can enter Singapore. Do you have any experience with this kind of arrangement?

Why does MHC still want the Singapore PR IC when the pink IC is already obtained?

      Reply

      • StevenJune 28, 2022

So, I can answer my own question. I was at MHC today to submit my documents for renunciation.

For those of us who have already received the pink IC before submitting documents for renunciation, we must provide copies of the Singapore PR blue IC. The reason for this is (at least in my case), I have not yet received my Singapore citizenship certificate. Because of this, MHC do not want copies of the pink IC. Instead they want copies of the blue IC. So ensure that you make copies of the blue IC before they are punched by ICA.

And it appears that the queue is pretty long today when I was there.

Hope the information helps for those who have yet to reach this step.

Thank you very much Xiongdiary.com for your useful information.

Just want to share my renunciation experience at the MHC this morning with your blog readers.

    1. My appointment slot is from 8-9am. I reached there about 730am and there were 8 people ahead of me. Please note that there are 2 separate queue, one for passport and one for renunciation (consular). The friendly security officer will show you to the correct queue.

    2. At about 750am, the gate opens and after verification of the appointment letter by the security officer, proceeded to the Consular office but it is not opened yet. So, a little bit more waiting and the Consular office opens at about 815am.

    3. 2 staff in charge of renunciation will come out from the office and stationed outside the consular office. Then, we were told to form 2 lines and each of us will be given 3 forms to be filled in. ( 2 Yellow Borang K & MY-RN1) There is also a sample Borang K in white for reference. Thumb prints will be done onto the 2 Yellow Borang K. Proceed to fill in the forms with black ink pen.

    4. After filling in the forms, go inside the Consular office and take the Q number which comes in 2 pieces. There is a A4 size pink paper indicating where the Q machine is ( it is in the far end of the room, slightly to your left when you walk in)

    5. There is another queue in the office for document verification but I supposed not compulsory if you have all your documents ready. (I skipped this step)

    6. Wait for your number to be called and submit the documents then wait for your number to be called again at Counter 1 for your S$10 payment.

    7. Do the payment and collect a pink slip indicating your collection date for your MY-RN1 form (3 working days later)

    8. By 9am, all settled.

MHC will collect your Malaysia IC and passport and you will not be getting back your IC and passport. You cannot travel during this period until apply for your Singapore passport. Rightfully, you should not make any travel plans that are 2 or 3 months ahead from the date of issue of your approval letter.

    – Arrived 0730hr. Saw min 100 pax outside waiting; separate queue formed for passport, renunciation, marriage
    – Friendly officer assisted but gave all the wrong information. Was told only 100 applicants/ forms allowed for remuneration and asked to come back next week to try again
    – Asked another officer who requested to see ICA letter and subsequently issued a set of forms and an appointment date to return next week

    Hi Xiong

Appreciated your documented journey of you being a Singapore Citizen. I have just did my renunciation of my Malaysian Citizenship this morning and as LOH mentioned in the earlier comments. WALK-INS only beginning from JULY 1 2022.

However I made 2 trips to MHC… The first day was when I did not make the 100 quota of the day. I took the a queue number a week later with 2 yellow Borang K forms and MY-RN1 from the officers standing infront of the guard house. I think you need to make 2 trips…one to get the queue no with forms and the other trip is when you are ready to submit all your documents WITH your allocated Q-Number.

I hope this info comes in handy as I see many folks having the same problem of “WALKING-IN” thinking they can do it on the same day but left disappointed having to return again.

Just want to updated here that the write in email for appointment is not acceptable anymore due to overwhelming application for renunciation, it’s now required to go down to High Commission of Malaysia in Singapore to take appointment date and original Borang K 2 copies in yellow, before can go there another time for submission. You may want to updated this post 🙂 I’ve noticed that many went down to submit only to find out can only take appointment date before can proceed of submission after certain date assigned by the embassy.

I renounced my Malaysian citizenship on this Monday. The lady from the embassy in Berlin wanted to finish it as soon as possible. I felt like she just wanted to kick me out of the embassy. Honestly, I was a bit sad/emotional as it wasn‘t really easy for me to renounce my citizenship. I lived more than 20 years in Malaysia.

After we finished the process and I asked her whether I‘ll have to come to collect my documents. She said: no, I‘ll call you or write you an e-mail. So you can come to collect your birth of certificate and borang k.

I also asked her whether I could travel abroad while it‘s processing and she said: why not? You still have your passport.

By the way, I didn’t even get a receipt. It was a bit weird for me.

I think the citizenship renunciation process in embassy Berlin is different from Malaysia High Commission in Singapore. In Singapore, IC and passport will be collected during the renunciation process. I can’t travel abroad after the citizenship renunciation until I got my Singapore passport.

Hi Guys, I went to the MHC on 19th sept to renounce my citizenship. I reached at 8.20am, checked with the guard and he asked me to go in to the consular section (right hand side of the building) There was already a queue but it was moving fast. There was a officer checking all the documents ( passport, ic, bc, ica letter and so on). Then he gave the forms to be filled up. I already had the forms with me as I was suppose to submit the documents in august but missed the appointment. He checked the forms if everything is filled up correctly and took my fingerprints. And then he asked me to get a queue number and wait to be called. The waiting time wasn’t very long, got called within 30 minutes. Spent less than10 minutes at the counter to submit the documents and forms. And once submitted, wait to be called for payment at counter 1. Once payment done, I left with the pink slip. The entire process took one hour for me, and I left at 9.20.

      Hi Cheryl,
As consular service open for walk-in, you can do it one week before the ICA appointment. Alternatively, you can check with ICA whether you can change the appointment date if you were to do the citizenship renunciation now. Whichever case it is, please constantly check out MHC website for consular services update and plan your date cautiously.
And yes, from the day you renounce your Malaysia citizenship until your ICA appointment, you are so call “stateless.”

Hi thanks. I’ve just did the renunciation. Was asked to return to collect the acknowledgement letter 3 days later. Is that referring to MY-RN1? After collection, do I keep it with me till ICA appt? Or to submit e-copy in ICA portal before my appt day? Thanks.

Hi Leanne, Yes, that is referring to MY-RN1 form. You can upload the document to ICA portal before the appointment. Please bring along the physical copy for your appointment as well.

Tq for the precious sharing! Now i am struggling should I reschedule my appointment? My appointment to ICA is on 21/12/22. I have not book the renunciation yet. I am worry next year cannot go back Malaysia for CNY? It is because the processing time might take 6-8 months? May I seek your advice? Thank you 🙂

      Hi EU,

The consular service has opened for walk-in, you can plan for renouncing your Malaysia citizenship one week before the ICA appointment date. Alternatively, you can check with ICA whether you can change the appointment date if you were to do the citizenship renunciation now. Whichever case it is, please constantly check out MHC website for consular services update and plan your date cautiously.

After renunciation, you will be collecting the MY-RN1 form after 3 working days. Again, please check with MHC to make sure the processing time is still the same. You need the MY-RN1 form for your ICA appointment for Singapore Citizenship registration. After the registration, you can apply for Singapore passport online after one working day (https://xiongdiary.com/singapore-passport-online-application/).
Currently, the passport processing time is about one to two weeks. Again, always check out the latest update from ICA website.

The 6 to 8 month is the estimation time for you to collect the borang-K.

        Hi Mr Kwah
Thank you for such informative posts!
Appreciate for further clarifications on certain issues below:
        – About Malaysia birth certificate, it should be FULLY laminated? Because mine was previously partially laminated (only the front portion).
        – What documents will be held by Malaysia immigration side after submission of Borang K?
I read somewhere in the threads that one will become “stateless” during transition process from Malaysia to Singapore citizenship.
Pardon if my questions were asked in previous threads.
        Thank you.

          1. I am not sure what do you mean by partially laminated but yes, your birth certificate must be fully laminated.
          2. During the renunciation at MHC, you will be submitting your Malaysia IC, Malaysia Passport and Birth certificate.
          3. I think technically you are still a Malaysian during the transition process until you completed the Singapore citizenship registration and oath taking.

      Hi Joven,
You should receive the final stage approval letter after completed the Singapore Journey. The letter would state your appointment date and time with ICA for Singapore Citizenship registration and oath taking. You must complete the Malaysia citizenship renunciation before your appointment with ICA.

Can I ask, when you submit borang K and MY-RN1 to MHC, do you have to handover your Malaysia passport? I see comments from some of the readers that the Malaysian passport is only handed over during the Singapore renunciation registration? Cause I do have some business trips in the coming few months.

Hi JH, your children do not need to go through the renunciation process at MHC. Renunciation is only applicable if your children are 21 years old and above at the time of registration for Singapore Citizenship.
You are required to be present with your child to complete your child’s registration for Singapore Citizenship. However, your child is not required for the oath taking.

Or just submit the original copy without any laminating wil do. Also about the Singapore citizenship certificate, we still yet to go ICA for registration how can I have the certificate? Hi Michael,
You must laminate your birth certificate. This is the requirement by MHC. My birth certificate is also a small old document, and I laminated it before submission. During the renunciation submission, you will be filling out the Borang-K and MY-RN1. The officer there will give you the forms. Singapore citizenship certificate is not required.

I’m just about to complete the Stage 2 online quiz. My question is- how long did it take from your first in-principle letter to getting your passport from ICA? 2-3 months in total? I’m trying to work out my timeline as I have work travel planned in Sept. My in-principle letter came in May. I know yours happened during covid but it would give me an idea for expectation… Many thanks!

    Hi,

    Thanks for your write up.

New sample of Borang K shows a part for photo to be pasted.

I went there for attestation of my passport and ic.

Saw a lot of people trying to photocopy. Machine not very user-friendly. So make sure you bring extra copies of your birth cert, IC, ica letters. IC must be front and back on one page. I made copies of passport also. There is a photo booth.

Bring glue to stick your passport photo.

    Will do my renunciation soon.
