There aren’t many laundrettes* (or laundromats) right in the centre of London, but you won’t have to travel too far to find one.
They’re ideal if your hotel or or airBNB doesn’t have laundry facilities, if you don’t want to pay their service wash fees or if you’d prefer to do your own laundry.
*In British English it’s either launderette or laundrette.
Self-service laundrettes
Do your own washing and drying using a self-service coin-operated washing machine and tumble dryer. Expect to pay around from £5–£7 for a standard-sized machine. Larger machines usually cost extra. Standard-sized washes take around 35 minutes.
The cost of drying your clothes in a tumble dryer varies considerably. Allow around £3–£4 extra to dry a standard load.
Laundrettes usually have washing power for sale but it’s a good idea to buy your own; some places don’t have staff there all the time and washing powder/liquid is cheaper from a supermarket. Also, ensure you take a supply of £1, 50p coins with you.
Last wash
Please note that the last coin-op (self-service) wash is normally 45-60 minutes before closing time.
Service washes
If you don’t mind paying extra, most laundrettes offer a service wash and will wash, iron and fold your clothes. Prices start from around £10 per small load and increase according to the weight (the prices listed below are the minimum charge). Whatever the cost, it is still cheaper than asking your hotel to do it for you.
