In 2022, Crédit Agricole led the ranking of French banks based to the number of customers and accounted for 53 million clients. It was followed by BNP Paribas and Société Générale, both with more than 30 million clients. In 2021, Crédit Agricole was also among the largest French banks in terms of market capitalization: It ranked second after BNP Paribas.

Beside traditional banking which offers services in local agencies as well as on the Internet, online banking is taking ever more importance on the banking market in France. The online banking market penetration rate in France increased significantly in the last decade. Online bank Boursorama (subsidiary of Société Générale) led the ranking of online banks with approximately 3 million customers in 2021.

Digital payments are by far the most widely-used function of online banking, followed by neobanking and digital investments. The user base of all these functions are expected to grow gradually in the coming years. In terms usage among various age groups, online banking services were the most popular among people aged between 25 and 34 years in 2021.
