Sacramento Kings guard Buddy Hield hit his 1,000th career 3-pointer in his 350th game on Sunday, passing Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry as the fastest player in NBA history to reach the milestone.
In his fifth NBA season, Hield entered Sunday needing seven 3s to hit 1,000. He buried his seventh before the midpoint of the third quarter. Curry needed 369 games to hit the mark, doing so in January 2015 during his sixth season.
Hield finished 8 of 15 while totaling 30 points and seven assists. The Kings blew a late lead in a 127-126 loss to the Charlotte Hornets.

The Kings traded for Hield in 2017, hoping he’d improve the team in that area, and he’s emerged as one of the league’s best outside shooters. The Kings believe an open 3 for Hield is always a good shot and he loves to shoot them. Hield’s shooting numbers are down this season, but he remains a threat whenever he’s on the court.
In today’s 3-point happy era, will this record be broken often?
Sam Amick, senior NBA writer: What Hield has done from long range is impressive, to be sure. But the unrelenting emphasis on the 3-point shot in this era means that these sorts of marks will inevitably be matched or surpassed.
Consider this bit of statistical evidence to that point: Hield entered Sunday’s game having averaged 2.8 made 3s in his career, and that sort of per-game pace was good enough to best Curry on this 3-point front. Well, there are currently 25 players averaging at least 2.8 made threes per game this season. That’s very telling.
Who could be next to break the record?
Amick: The first candidate who comes to mind is Atlanta’s Trae Young, who makes his living from long range. Yet while the Hawks star (2.5 made 3s per game thus far) could get to 1,000 faster than Hield (2.8) if he picks up his pace, Miami’s Duncan Robinson is in a much better spot to pull off the feat. The Heat guard has 392 3s through 122 games, a pace that would have him surpassing the 1,000 mark after 312 games.
