How much horsepower can you get out of an ISX Cummins? ›

With horsepower ratings that range from 400-600 and up to 2050 pound-feet peak torque it's no surprise that this engine is a favourite for fleet operators and drivers alike. But despite the engine's popularity, it isn't perfect. Let's run through some of the most common issues.

It could run 15 years or it might let go tomorrow but you can say that about most anything used....... Isx is a million mile engine or 20,000 -25,000hr. That being said I would have the lower bearings changed and set the valves and you should be good.

The vehicle should be geared to operate at the manufacturers recommended rpm at whatever road speed the vehicle will spend most of its time. The 2007 on-highway standard gearing for Linehaul Applications (≤ 80,000 lbs) at 65 mph is 1450 rpm for ISX engines and 1500 rpm for ISM engines up to 370 HP.

The Dodge Cummins engine has been around since 1989, providing power to the Dodge Ram. That's three decades of hard work - there are bound to be Dodge Cummins years to avoid after all that time. We recommend staying away from the 1991, 1992, 1993, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2011 models.

Cummins engines typically offer a strong low-end torque, providing solid initial acceleration. Duramax engines are praised for their smooth power delivery, offering a balance between torque and responsiveness. Power Stroke engines have robust acceleration compared to their torque output.

The year 2002 can be called the best year for Cummins ISX. With its greater fuel efficiency and faster processing, the Cummins ISX15 has quickly become the most important series among the Cummins' diesel engine fleet.

The Cummins ISX engine was intended to be an improved version of the N14 engine, but it failed to deliver on its potential. While it may have a maximum power output of 600 HP and torque of 2000 lb-ft, the ISX proved problematic from the start. The fuel option did little to address these problems.

In 2002, the Cummins ISX15, also known as the “Signature” series, started production. It upheld its name because it had an innovative fuel system called the “Interact System.” The “IS” in ISX15 stands for “Interact System.” Since its launch, the Cummins ISX15 has been the core of Cummins' diesel engine fleet.

You should run your overhead every 100,000 miles, if this has not been done in the 500,000 miles of the vehicle, it needs to be. $350-$500 is ALOT cheaper than 2 ISX camshafts and rockers.

These engines can typically last 300,000 to 350,000 miles, which is considered high mileage –but a well-maintained Cummins engine can reach up to 500,000 miles. It's important to keep a truck with a Cummins engine well-serviced because the truck's other parts might run down far before its engine does.

What mileage is too high for a used semi truck? ›

A semi-truck can last between 500,000 to 750,000 miles with regular maintenance and preventive care. It involves changing the oil, checking the brakes, and rotating the tires. By doing this, you can avoid significant problems and keep your truck running smoothly for a long time.

The ISX15 generates 1850 lb-ft of peak torque. This engine rating is designed to overdeliver – with peak horsepower at around 580 (433 kW), available from 1700 rpm through 1900 rpm. Low-end performance is exceptionally strong, as it runs from 1150 rpm to 1500 rpm at the full 1850 lb-ft of peak torque.

Typically, engines idle at about 600-800 rpm. Older engines may go up to 1200 rpm or more while warming up. But if the engine is revving up while idling, even after it's sufficiently warmed up, you might have a problem. High idle speeds waste fuel, cause extra wear and tear on your engine, and can be unsafe as well.

If you own a 1994-2002 12- or 24-valve Cummins-powered RAM truck and have had automatic transmission problems, you're most definitely not alone. The 47RE transmission in these trucks is not a favored transmission among Cummins owners.
