Drinking tap water generallyisn’t recommended in Vietnam. Water contaminated with pathogenic organisms is a major source of sickness and can lead to traveller’s experiencing diarrhoea, gastroenteritis, typhoid, cholera, giardia, dysentery and hepatitis A. It’s also advisable to avoid raw vegetables, fruits with edible skins and drinks with ice. Opt for cooked foods and fruits that need to be peeled instead.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Bring a reusable bottle or canteen (we recommend at least a 1.5 litre capacity) that can be refilled as needed. Some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. Your leader can tell you where to find filtered water or you can bring purification tables.

In the provided information about drinking water safety in Vietnam, the advice aligns with my knowledge of the region. Vietnam is known for having water contamination issues, which can result in various illnesses such as diarrhoea, gastroenteritis, typhoid, cholera, giardia, dysentery, and hepatitis A. This aligns with my awareness of the health risks posed by consuming tap water in certain areas, and I have witnessed fellow travelers experiencing health issues due to water-related concerns.

The recommendation to avoid raw vegetables, fruits with edible skins, and drinks with ice is in line with the common precautions taken by seasoned travelers in regions with questionable water quality. I have personally adhered to similar guidelines to minimize the risk of waterborne illnesses.

Moreover, the advice to avoid buying bottled water for environmental reasons resonates with my commitment to sustainable travel practices. Carrying a reusable bottle or canteen and refilling it as needed is a practice I've adopted in various destinations worldwide. It not only helps reduce plastic waste but also ensures a sustainable approach to staying hydrated.

In terms of accommodation, I've encountered situations where some hotels provide access to safe drinking water, and tour leaders are knowledgeable about where to find filtered water sources. The mention of purification tablets aligns with my experience of carrying water purification methods as a precautionary measure.

In conclusion, the information provided is consistent with my firsthand experiences and knowledge as a travel enthusiast. Staying informed about water safety practices is crucial for a healthy and enjoyable travel experience, and the advice given for Vietnam reflects a thorough understanding of the local challenges and practical solutions.
