Is there a way to reorder the Accounts in my Chart of Accounts in Quickbooks Online? (i.e., so that I can group my bank and credit card accounts together at the top)
Hello there. tad151.
I can see how important for you and your business to reorder the accounts of your chart of accounts. Currently, this option isn't possible in QuickBooks Online. Instead, you can sort the list in ascending or descending order.
Here's how:
- Go toAccountingfrom the sidebar menu, thenChart of Accounts.
- You can click theNAME,TYPE,DETAIL TYPE,CURRENCY,QUICKBOOKS BALANCE, andBANK BALANCEto sort the lists.
- Select↓to sort it in descending order or↑to sort the registers in ascending order.
Alternatively, you can use the account number to organize your chart of accounts. You'll need to enable this feature if you want to assign a number to your accounts. I'll show you how.
- Go to theGearicon, thenAccount and settings.
- Select theAdvancedtab.
- Click theEditpencil icon in theChart of accountssection.
- SelectEnableaccount numbers.
- HitSaveand thenDone.
For complete instructions, check out this article:Use account numbers in your chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online.
Once everything is in place, you may want to use this resource as a reference for seamlessly matching your accounts:Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.
Please let me know if you need further assistance managing your chart of accounts. I'd be more than happy to assist you.

Will QuickBooks Online gain the function to reorder the Chart of Accounts anytime soon? This was an important feature that we didn't realize we would lose moving to Online.

Hi there, @JTWard.
We understand how important it is for you and your company to improve the reports in QuickBooks Online. I'm here to share some workaround.
This option is currently unavailable in QuickBooks Online. You can instead sort the data in ascending or descending order.
- SelectAccountingfrom the sidebar menu, followed byChart of Accounts.
- To sort the lists, click the Name, Type, Detail Type, Currency, QuickBooks Amount, and Bank Balance buttons.
- Choose whether to sort the registers in ascending or descending order.
Optionally, you can arrange your chart of accounts using the account number. If you want to allocate tasks to your accounts, you must first allow this feature. I'll demonstrate how:
- Navigate to theGearicon, then toAccount and Settings.
- Go to theAdvancedtab.
- In theChart of Accountssection, click theEditpencil icon.
- Enable account numbers are selected.
- Then clickSave and then Done.

We use a workaround. Simply rename your accounts with a leading exclamation point, then sort the list by name. We wanted our bank accounts listed first, followed by our credit accounts, so we used 2 leading exclamation points for our bank accounts.
Our list now looks similar to this:
!!Bank Account 1
!!Bank Account 2
!Credit Account 1
!Credit Account 2
!Credit Account 3
etc
etc
It isnt ideal but it works!
