If you browse around on the app store in the personal finance section, chances are you will come across a cool little app called Acorns. What exactly is the Acorns app you ask? Well, let’s get right into that…

What is Acorns?

In short, Acorns is a micro investing app that allows you to automate your investments by rounding up the spare change on all purchases you make with the debit card linked to your Acorns account. With the Acorns app, every time you make a purchase, (no matter how big or small) you are investing money for your future without breaking the bank.

As a mother who tends to be forgetful and somewhat lax when it comes to saving money, this is an amazing feature for me. It makes it so I don’t have to think about setting money aside. I know that every purchase I make, some more money is being deposited into my Acorns account. Granted, it is only rounded up to the nearest dollar, but that can add up really fast!

So How Exactly Does Acorns Work?

Acorns works by investing the spare change from your purchases into a stock portfolio. In fact, on their website it states that they have over 7,000 different stocks that funds are invested into, and that the funds are re-balanced regularly to give you the absolute best return on your investment. In short, that just means more money for you in your pocket! Cha-Ching!

The Acorns app only works on purchases made with your debit card linked to your Acorns account, so you do have to have and use a debit card regularly for the app to be of value. Personally, in my first month of using the app I have saved over $45 just from round ups made from my everyday purchases. I also love that it makes banking easier because I always have an even amount of money in my account. No change to worry about!

Is It Free?

Here is the kicker. Technically, the answer to that question is no, unless you are a college student under the age of 24. There is good news though, and that is the fact that at the base account (which gives you all of the features you will need to start investing your spare change) is only a small $1 a month. For me, that one dollar is easily justifiable to spend for the app subscription because I am saving so much more than that every month because of the app that I definitely would not have been saving or investing without the help of the app.

So, Is Acorns Worth The Download?

In my opinion, the Acorns app is definitely worth using if you are looking to get started in investing and do not want to put up a lot of money up front. It is also great if you want to “Set and forget” your investments and watch them grow on autopilot. With the Acorns app, it is very easy to rack up a good chunk of change in a short amount of time without ever having to think about it. Investing on auto pilot is definitely worth it for me, being the busy new mom that I am.

In short, if you are looking for something fast and easy with a low start up cost that you can set and forget, I would definitely download the app and give it a try. They have the option to cash out at any time straight to your bank account, so if you do download it and get investing and then an expense comes up that you weren’t planning for, it is easy to take your money out of the account. That is one thing that I definitely love about the app. Nobody likes having their money locked in somewhere for a set amount of time, at least I don’t!
