Men are getting a new Link, and its essentially a bigger version of the watch TAG Heuer introduced for women a year ago. The Link is a stainless steel sports watch and the descendant of a watch originally released in 1987, shortly after TAG acquired Heuer. The watch was known back then as the S/EL – short for Sports Elegance – and it featured a very distinct bracelet; the links were all shaped like an S, giving TAG’s new watch a bold look to say the least.

Thirty years later, the Link is back, this time in an elegant cushion-shaped case with a flat brushed steel bezel. The watch features hours, minutes, and seconds, plus a small date window, and on looks alone, it will no doubt draw comparison to the Piaget Polo S, another decades-old design which was revived by Piaget last year. TAG Heuer’s watch sits in a very different prize segment though, and quintessentially TAG Heuer through and through (notice I said TAG Heuer and not just Heuer).

The new Link comes in a 41mm case that is both brushed and polished to create shape and contrast. The bracelet has been totally re-thought. The links looks bigger and flatter than on the older models, and, as a whole, look a lot more aggressive than those of the original. The links are brushed, but their edges are rounded and polished, carrying through the contrast from the case. Notice that this is a truly integrated bracelet, with the end links flanking a tab built into the case structure.

The Link will be offered with three different dial options, black, silver, and blue. The last may well prove to be the most popular – stainless steel sports watches with bracelets have a long history of success with the color.

The watch is powered by Calibre 5, TAG Heuer's house-branded ETA 2824, which is a workhorse self-winding movement with little finishing. It offers 38 hours of power reserve and measures only 26mm in diameter. So while we do not have pictures of the back of the watch yet, the contrast between the size of the watch and its movement will be noticeable, as the movement will be visible through a sapphire caseback.

The new TAG Heuer Link will retail for 2,700 CHF (approximately $2,715 at time of publishing), a seriously attractive price for mechanical sports watch with a stainless steel bracelet. It’s a great value proposition, definitely a smart alternative to the existing Aquaracer, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if this one ended up being quite the mass success for TAG Heuer
