More City of Townsville residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2021.
The City of Townsville's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in City of Townsville in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (16,480 people or 17.5%)
- Public Administration and Safety (11,800 people or 12.6%)
- Education and Training (8,826 people or 9.4%)
In combination, these three industries employed 37,106 people in total or 39.5% of the total employed resident population.
In comparison, Regional QLD employed 15.4% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 5.6% in Public Administration and Safety; and 8.7% in Education and Training.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the City of Townsville and Regional QLD were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in public administration and safety (12.6% compared to 5.6%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (17.5% compared to 15.4%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (0.7% compared to 4.3%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in construction (8.5% compared to 9.6%)
