I have tried in vain to re-add these indexes that were mistakenly deleted, with no luck. Can I restore this app alone or is there a way to re-add them?

You can add them back using the Stocks app. Tap the circled i at the bottom right if the page. On the next page, tap the white + at the top left to add a stock. The NASDAQ composite index symbol is ^IXIC, and the S & P 500 symbol is ^GSPC.
