For the first time this week, a commercial bank in the UK has provided funding at scale to Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs), which provide loans to businesses and social enterprises that cannot get the finance they need from banks.Lloyds Banking Group, along with junior capital fromBig Society Capital, has provided significant funding for the second version of the Community Investment Enterprise Fund (CIEF), which will be managed bySocial Investment Scotland. The fund will invest £62m in the sector and the participating CDFIsareBCRS Business Loans,Business Enterprise Fund (BEF)andFinance For Enterprise.Mark Hall who leads our place-based impact investing programme explains why this is a landmark decision and how it directly ties into our work in this article for Impact-Investor.com. We support CDFIs in taking on more institutional investment in the future and are working on the creation of financing vehicles that can channel capital at scale to those businesses around the country that need it the most.Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/3V3nIOU#impactinvesting #places #cdfis

For the first time, a mainstream bank in the UK has provided funding at scale to Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs), which provide loans to businesses and social enterprises that cannot get the finance they need from banks. Lloyds Banking Group, along with junior capital fromBig Society Capital, has provided significant funding for the second version of the Community Investment Enterprise Fund (CIEF), which will be managed bySocial Investment Scotland. The fund will invest £62m in the sector and the participating CDFIsare BCRS Business Loans,Business Enterprise Fund (BEF)andFinance For Enterprise. Many advocates for impact investing describe CDFIs (there are more than 30 across the UK, which are part of the Responsible Finance network) as one of the hidden superpowers of the finance system in the UK. Deeply rooted in local communities, CDFIs have been unlocking the potential of thousands of small and medium-sized businesses that would have never been able to launch otherwise.Historically, one of the main challenges has been the lack of investment at scale into CDFIs themselves so they are able to support more small enterprises across the UK.This groundbreaking investment shows that mainstream banks can support these small enterprises indirectly through blended finance structures like CIEF and we hope that other large banks will follow suit.We are committed to continue our work to help CDFIs in taking on more institutional investment in the future and support the creation of financing vehicles that can channel capital at scale to those businesses around the country that need it the most.We do this as part of our place-based impact investing programme, which is led by Mark Hall. If you are interested in partnering with us on our CDFI work, please get in touch with Mark or Jamie Broderick. #communitydevelopment#cdfi#financialinclusion#impactinvesting#blendedfinance
