War is often a sore topic among countries, especially if they have had a bad experience with it in the past. Because of this, countries won't go to war in order to avoid what they believe, is something that causes more problems than it solves. Countries can't be scared to go to war and fight what they believe in. Although war is gruesome it's necessary to solve the world's biggest problems because it settles moral and physical arguments, brings out the best in men, and allows countries to grow and prosper.

War allows arguments to be settled by a method done much quicker than peaceful protest: force. Countries with major unsolvable problems such as over capacity or over controlling enemies should go to war as a last resort. People that lived in the American Colonies during the American Revolution thought the British were over controlling. Thomas Paine, a famous writer who was an advocate of the American Revolution explained in Common Sense "In the early ages of the world, according to the scripture chronology, there were no kings; the consequence of which was there were no wars; it is the pride of kings which throws mankind into confusion." Paine is trying to convince the people of the American Colonies that a monarchy is an unfit way to rule a country, and is the root of most wars. He helps to explain the importance of war in order for America to better itself and prevent things like unreasonable taxation, the possibility of future wars and allow the freedom for a country to make its own laws. The beginning conflicts of America were one among many conflicts solved with war and revolution.

A man or woman's bare personality can come out during war whether it be brave or cowardly. This allows the brave to rewarded and the cowardly to be forgotten. This is evident in the case of Medal of Honor recipient, Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta. Stationed in the Korengal Outpost, Giunta was fighting in the War in Afghanistan. He and seven other troops had just finished a day long overwatch in the valley surrounding the outpost. As they were walking back, 15 insurgents ambushed his squad, managing to kill one soldier and capture another, before the squad managed to fight them off. In an amazing act of bravery, Giunta ran towards the fleeing terrorists attempting to rescue his fellow soldier. Salvatore shot the man carrying the squad member, and Giunta brought him back to safety. When Salvatore returned home, he was rewarded with the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery in the battlefield. The hero like characteristics Salvatore Giunta displayed are shown in many people that returned from war. Although some people come away from war in a worse mental or physical condition than they started with, more come home braver and stronger, and it allows them to prosper in the real world. According to the National Institute of Health roughly 31% of veterans that served in The Vietnam War, and 10% of veterans that served in the War in Afghanistan suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. This side effect of war is caused when soldiers witness a terrifying and usually life threatening event. This disorder can cause the soldier affected with it to be suicidal and want to bring harm to themselves and others. Fortunately, The United States Government is working to treat people with this disorder. According to The Department of Defense, the government spent more than 3 billion dollars on PTSD treatment in 2012 alone. The Veterans Affairs, or VA, has worked with the government to train more than 6,000 mental health care providers to help with the half a million patients currently being treated. Although not perfect, these methods have shown to be an effective way to treat returning soldiers.

An effective way for a country to grow and prosper is through war. In the same way mold has an ever wanting need to spread, countries are always striving to increase their borders. Rome grew because it conquered its weak neighbors. By 260 BC, Rome had full control of Italy and by 100 BC The Roman Empire defeated the Carthaginians which gave Rome control of the Mediterranean. With control of most of the areas around the Mediterranean, The Roman Empire had the amount of citizens and enough available land for farming that satisfied the empire for more than 500 years. Commandeering other nations was the only way for this empire to last as long as it did and support the amount of people it did. The Roman Empire is one of many examples of how countries can expand for however long they want as long as they are willing to go to war.

War is as necessary as breathing. People can stop doing it for awhile, but eventually they will have to continue. Even though war can sometimes seem violent and everybody would like to avoid it, it allows the progression of humankind. Maybe in the future the world will completely agree on everything and war will no longer be a necessity, but as it stands the world still needs it. Self proclaimed billionaire, Silvio Berlusconi said " We all say no to war, we are all for justice and peace. But sometimes in order to maintain peace, armed action is necessary. But we hope it won't be the case." Berlusconi explains that in order for the world to achieve peace on the planet, armed action in some form will still be necessary.
