Siri, the "smart assistant" that comes installed on all Apple devices, can help you use nearly every default iPhone app. It can make calendar appointments, find directions, set timers — and even send text messages.

You can send text messages to anyone using Siri on your iPhone or Apple Watch with just a voice command. Here's how it works.

How to send text messages with Siri

Siri can send text messages from your iPhone or Apple Watch. If you're connected to the internet, you can send iMessages; and if you're connected to a cellular signal, you can send SMS messages.

The same goes for the iPad. If your iPad is a Wi-Fi + Cellular model and it's connected to mobile data, Siri can send text messages too — if you don't have a cell signal or it's a standard Wi-Fi model, you can only send iMessages.

To make Siri send a text message, activate Siri and say "Send a text to," then say who you want to send your message to. You can either give a name from your contacts list, or a complete phone number.

Siri will ask what you want to say. Start dictating your text message.

Remember that Siri doesn't understand punctuation. If you want to insert commas or end sentences, you'll have to actively say "comma" or "period" at the right time.

You can also insert emoji by describing them. For example, you can say "Heart emoji" to type a ♥️, or say "Waving hand emoji" to type 👋.

When you're done, just pause for a moment. After about a second of silence, Siri will read what you've written back to you, then ask if you want to edit it or send it.

Say "Edit text" if you want to retry the whole thing, or "Send" if you're ready to send it. You can also say "Cancel" to exit and stop the whole process.

Texts that you've sent with Siri will appear in your Messages app just like normal messages. And if they're iMessages, you can still edit or unsend them.

How to make Siri send messages without confirmation

Once you finish dictating a text message to Siri, it'll read the message back to you and ask for confirmation that you want to send it. But if your iPhone or iPad is running iOS/iPadOS 16, you can skip this step.

To make Siri send messages without confirmation, open the Settings app and scroll down to select Siri & Search, and then select Automatically Send Messages. On the page that appears, tap the Automatically Send Messages toggle switch to turn it on.

Once it's on, you'll also unlock two new toggle switches that let you choose whether you want to skip confirmations while your device is connected to Headphones or CarPlay too.

From now on, Siri will send texts as soon as you finish dictating them.
