How to Make Money by Designing Wedding Invitations - MBA sahm (2024)

I am the last person in the world you would ever peg as someone that designs and sells wedding invitations, but it’s true. In fact, it’s one of my favorite hobbies. And not only does it earn me some extra money, but it is pretty easy and extremely flexible – you can work on them anytime, anywhere (which I’m always a fan of).

If you read my posts regularly, you already know I’m a huge fan of Zazzle and once again, that is the resource I use for creating and selling wedding collections. I love, love, love Zazzle, so I use it for all kinds of creations, but wedding collections are really popular there and for good reason. There are so many great ideas and you’re able to customize everything. I actually used Zazzle products for my own wedding.

So here’s how it happens.

Step 1: Design or photograph amazing images.

How to Make Money by Designing Wedding Invitations - MBA sahm (2) Remember, we’re talking about someone’s wedding here so the images need to be really high quality. They do not, however, need to be complex, busy, or rare. In fact, a really simple design is likely to do better – it just needs to be high quality.

When you’re taking pictures or designing your images, keep in mind that you will need to be including text on your invitations, so try and include empty space where words can go. Invitations need to say a lot so in most cases this will mean at least half of the image. Your other option is to create an image that will go behind text. Either way, if it’s going to be an invitation, it will need to say something!

Step 2: Begin Invitation Creation

You will need a Zazzle account (totally free) so make sure you do that first. Once you have an account, you can create literally hundreds of products, but I always start a wedding collection with the invitation (I’ll go over other products you should create later). Zazzle makes the creation process really easy, so just follow their prompts for adding the image to the invitation template. Make sure your image covers the entire area that you intend it to, otherwise it will not look clean or professional.

Step 3: Adding Text

One of the reasons I love Zazzle so much is that it lets customers customize their orders. So no matter what text you add, they can change it to make it personal. Since wedding invitations will have to be customized, you want to make sure that you use Zazzle’s text editor and not something that is hard-coded onto the image.

It is really important to pick a pretty font and don’t feel like you need to stick to just one. Test out different colors and placement of your text to make the invitation look beautiful and unique.

Step 4: Publishing Your Invitation

Once your invitation is exactly as you like it, you’re ready to publish. Click on the Post for Sale button and you will be directed to the final page that will hold all of the details for your invitation. This is where you will categorize it, pick keywords for it, and also decide what the price will be.

Step 5: Making Complementary Products

This is one of my favorite parts because there is no end to the creative ideas that people have come up with for wedding accessories. As I said before, Zazzle offers the option to create hundreds of products and many of them can be used for weddings. So to turn your invitation into a whole wedding collection, you can create additional products that match. How to Make Money by Designing Wedding Invitations - MBA sahm (5)If you want these products to be used with your invitations, you need to make sure that they look exactly the same – so try to stick to the same image, font, and colors.

Here are some of my favorite wedding products:

  • Stamps
  • Favor boxes
  • Thank You notecards
  • Envelopes
  • Stickers
  • Table cards

Step 6: Let the Selling Begin!

Here’s the greatest thing about Zazzle – you don’t need to be a marketer or salesperson to make money. Zazzle has a great search engine and a brilliant team of marketers that do a ton of marketing on their own. So if you’ve got a high quality product and you’ve added keywords at the end, you will eventually make some sales. But don’t expect sales to happen right away. When I was new to Zazzle it took a few weeks for my first sale to happen. Now that I’ve been using the site for a while, I make a sale every day.

Good luck! Happy Zazzling!
