How to Extend a Tourist Visa in Brazil - Brazilian Experience (1)

Most international visitors get a 90-day visa upon entering Brazil. If you stay longer than this but do not extend the visa, you will be charged R$8/day for every day you overstay, up to a maximum of R$800. This fine can be paid upon leaving the country, but you also have the option to pay when you re-enter the country at a later time.

Bear in mind when you renew your visa, you get 90 days from the date of renewal. So if you renew it 3 weeks prior to expiry, you will get 180 days minus 3 weeks. Don’t leave it too late either! Make sure you renew it at least a few days prior to expiry in case there are any problems.

The Federal Police (Polícia Federal) is responsible for extending tourist visas.

The applcant will need to fill in a form called Requerimento de prorrogação de estada. To download the form click here.

This form asks only for parents names, contact information, date of birth, nationality etc. Wait to sign it at the Federal Police. On this form the data “Cartão de entrada/saida (sequential)” is the number on the “Arrival/Departure Card”.

You will also need to complete a Guia de Recolhimento da União, which contains drop-down boxes to choose the appropriate Federal Police office, the service required, full name of parents and address.

  • To complete the form, click here or visit the link:

After completing this form, the website will automaticaly generate an invoice. Plese print it and go to any bank to pay for it. Only cash is accepted. The visa extension tax bill is R$ 67,00 and it should be paid before you go to the Federal Police. After collecting all the documents, the Policia Federal officer will ask you to sign the visa extension form, in front of him. The applicant will also need to submit themselves to fingerprinting.

Officials will take the documents and the applicant will be told to wait. Within a short while, the applicant’s name will be called and their passport will be returned containing a new extended visa stamp and a new date of expiration.
