How to be More Content on a Limited Budget (1)

When many people find themselves tied into a limited budget, they may become depressed, stressed out and feel absolute hopelessness. These feelings can really increase with time when you are stuck in a cycle of long term poverty or limited funds to do anything you want. So how does one break out of this feeling of the weight of the world on the, financially? By looking at ways to become content, you can even find some joy in your day to day struggles. Here is some tips on how to be more content on a limited budget.

Serve others who need help. This can be as simple as volunteering in a local charity such as a food bank or clothing closet or just helping your friends. There is a reason this kind of work gives you the warm fuzzies. It makes you grateful to be of service to others and helps you self examine what you have that others may not.

Start a gratefulness journal. This one is very simple, yet may seem like it is hard to do at first. Just get yourself a notebook and write down 3 things you are grateful for that day. The things you write do not even have to be objects, but more good belly laughs that you had or even simple things like the fact that you have clean clothing to wear that day. Soon, you will start to see just how much you do have and the things you don’t have will start to seem less important. If you are ever feeling especially beaten down, go back and look at what you wrote in the past for a quick pick-me-up.

Learn a new skill or how to DIY something. Often, our limited resources leave us with little option but to learn how to do things for ourselves and not rely on buying power. This really is a blessing that can carry you out of poverty if you apply it and continue to learn along the way. Embrace the fact that you know how to do some of these lost skills such as making your own laundry soap or mending clothing rather than taking your suit to a tailor or buying soap off the shelf for a huge markup in price.

Make friends with people who are in a similar situation. This doesn’t mean you need to snub your nose at those that are not on limited incomes, but it does mean that having some friends that understand your struggles can help you feel less alone and also help you get creative with frugal living.

Take up minimalist living. The idea behind minimalist living is basically shutting out the “buy! buy! buy!” push from our society and instead embracing a simpler lifestyle as a way of life, not just because you can’t afford more. The less you have, it seems, the less you will think you need. If you don’t have a need for as much, you won’t buy as much. Living simpler is much easier than it sounds, it simply requires a shift in attitudes.

Realize that the saying, “Money does not buy happiness” is very true. Money can buy you a lot of things, but in the end, it’s the things money can’t buy that keep us all content and happy. It is very true that a person could have all their bills paid and still be very unhappy.

What are some ways you try to remind yourself to have a grateful spirit?
