If you have a valid U.S. passport and you meet several additional requirements, you may be eligible to apply for a second U.S. passport book. If eligible, the second passport will be valid for four years or less, and will display the exact same personal information on the photo ID page as seen in your other passport.
Examples of cases when we may issue second U.S. passport books include:
- A foreign country will deny a visa or entry to you because your passport has stamps showing travel to certain countries. Example: an Israeli entry or exit stamp in some countries in the Middle East.
- You need multiple visas on an ongoing basis because of frequent international travel. Example: you work for an international airline or a multinational company
- You need a U.S. passport for urgent international travel but your application for a foreign visa is delayed or cannot be processed in time for your travel.
- When you need a special validation for travel to a restricted country or area.

How to Apply for a Second Passport Book
1. Fill Out Your FormIn most cases when applying for a second passport, you will need to complete a Renewal Application (Form DS-82). You may apply for a second passport using Form DS-82 if you can submit your full-validity, 10 year passport and you meet the other requirements to renew. You may renew your second passport but you must submit your second passport with your application. We will invalidate it so it cannot be used for international travel.
In some cases when applying for a second passport, you will need to apply in person and complete a Passport Application (Form DS-11) if you do not submit your full-validity, 10 year passport.
Please note:If you have you urgent international travel, you may be eligible to make an appointment toapply or renew at a passport agency or center.

Note: It may take 2 weeks from the day you apply until your application status is “In Process.” During these 2 weeks, your application is delivered to a mail facility, your payment is processed, and your application is scanned and sent to us. If your passport status update says “Not Available,” your application and supporting documents are safely on their way to us.

A Passport Card Does Not Count as a Second Passport
We only issue second passport books not second passport cards.
While customers rarely have two passport books, they commonly have both a passport book and a passport card. The passport book is valid for all types of travel. The passport card cannot be used for international air travel. The card can be used for land and sea travel when returning to the United States from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and several Caribbean countries and for domestic air travel.

Can I apply for a second passport at an acceptance facility?It depends.
If you are applying for a second passport with Forms DS-82 or DS-5504, acceptance facilities should never review these forms and supporting documents. The locations should only review your form and supporting documents if you’re applying using Form DS-11.
You must mail in Forms DS-82 and DS-5504 yourself. Mailing Forms DS-82 and DS-5504 can be confusing since some post offices are also passport acceptance facilities. However, postal employees should never review these forms or supporting documents before you mail them. We recommend you ask USPS to send your forms and supporting documents using a trackable delivery method.
Do not use UPS, FedEx, or DHL since the address you need to send your forms and supporting documents to is a Post Office (PO) Box.

Will I get a new passport number when I get a second passport book?Yes. When you receive your second passport book, the number on the document will be different from the number on your primary passport book. Make sure to update any DHS Trusted Traveler account information with your second passport book information.
