Microsoft's marquee first-person shooter franchise has reportedly made more than $10 billion over two decades.

343 has not disclosed how much Halo Infinite has earned.
Halo is one of the most known video game series and is one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time. However, there is a question about how much the series earned throughout its lifetime.
The first-person franchise is one of the best-selling video game series of all time with over 81 million copies sold. There has been some attention on the series as Microsoft is set to acquire Activision’s Call of Duty series. Gamers are comparing the two video game series in terms of profitability and player base.
According to former 343 Industries creative director Frank O’Conor, the Halo franchise is worth around $6 billion across games and other media including TV shows. O’Connor is the latest member of the 343 hierarchy that has left Microsoft after working on the series for almost two decades.
O’Connor’s figures may be slightly off as Microsoft has already reported the earnings before the launch of Halo Infinite in 2021. 343 Industries has not shared how much Halo Infinite earned since its launch. It would be easy to assume that the studio has some earnings given the excitement surrounding the series.
However, the LinkedIn profile for Lillian Lehmann, a Senior business partner at Microsoft, says that the Halo franchise is worth $10 billion. Lehmann is responsible for "analyzing contractual agreements, negotiating terms for game development initiatives, in-game content outsourcing and vendor contracts, and allocating resources" for the game series.

Halo is a full media franchise with books, comics, live-action adaptations, and an animated series. The Paramount+ TV series premiered last year and has been renewed for a second season. The series received mixed reviews as critics report that it has deviated from the source material.
Microsoft has expressed support for 343 Industries amidst the job cuts. The studio reportedly lost a good number of people as Microsoft streamlines its workforce. According to Microsoft, 343 will still be leading the development of Halo as rumors swirl that another studio would be handling future versions of the game.
In comparison, Activision’s Call of Duty franchise has reportedly earned $31 billion with the launch of 2022’s Modern Warfare 2. The latest title has already earned over $1 billion since its release last October.
Microsoft is still in the process of getting regulatory approval for its proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The deal is worth $69 billion and will include all IPs from Activision and Blizzard Entertainment. Microsoft says the deal is primarily to further the company’s presence in the mobile space with the acquisition of Candy Crush maker King.
