First of all, let’s take a look at the levels in IGCSE Math, from which we delve deeper into how many papers in IGCSE Math correspond to each level.

Most IGCSE subjects are divided into two levels, Core and Extended, both of which are usually taught the same curriculum and differ only in the extension. Students who choose to study Core will learn the most basic core knowledge for age 14-16, while students who choose to study Extended will complete Core knowledge and take an advanced part.

IGCSE Math also has the option of an Additional level. IGCSE Math Additional uses the different curriculum and is also the separate subject with the subject code that is different from the other two levels.

How many papers are in IGCSE Math?

Whichever level you choose, with the final exam from Cambridge, you will only pass two exams.

For Core, students will pass two papers, paper 1 and paper 3, based on the basic content.

  • Paper 1: Consists of short questions with the duration of 1 hour, accounting for 35% of the assessment weight, up to 56 points.
  • Paper 3: Consists of consecutive essay questions with the duration of 2 hours, accounting for 65% of the assessment weight, up to 104 points.

For Extended, students will pass two papers, paper 2 and paper 4, based on both basic and expanded content.

  • Paper 2: Consists of short questions with the duration of 1.5 hours, accounting for 35% of the assessment weight, up to 70 points.
  • Paper 4: Consists of consecutive essay questions with the duration of 2.5 hours, accounting for 65% of the assessment, up to 130 points.

For Additional, students will pass two papers, paper 1 and paper 2, based on the content of knowledge learned at this level. Each paper lasts 2 hours with the maximum score of 80 points which accounting for an equal 50% of the assessment weight.
