Investment bankers work an average of 60 to 80 hours a week. This is the most common range of working hours for investment bankers. However, some work for even 100 hours or more per week. Most reporting work weeks of 100 or more hours per week are analysts in the investment banking field.

Investment bankers mostly work far more than other professions and exceedingly more than the traditional work week of 40 to 50 hours. Here are some professions in the investment banking field, and financial field in general, that can have work weeks of 60 to 80 hours:

  • Investment Banker. An investment banker assists companies and organizations in increasing their profits. They can issue stocks and bonds to help clients raise capital. They also process financial transactions like purchasing, selling, or trading stocks.

    Investment bankers also offer clients and companies expert advice on big financial decisions, such as company mergers and acquisitions.

    In addition, they are also instrumental in assisting a company with an initial public offering (IPO). This is a set amount of stock a company offers to the public when it goes public.

  • Stockbroker. A stockbroker is a financial professional who handles securities transactions for clients. This includes the buying, trading, and selling of stocks.

    Generally, they look over their various clients' stock portfolios and give them expert advice on the appropriate times to buy more stocks or sell or trade their stocks.

    Stockbrokers utilize stock market research to determine how to increase their clients' wealth through these transactions. Stockbrokers work for large financial firms on Wall Street and small firms or independently throughout the country.

  • Asset Manager. An asset manager is a financial professional who seeks to aid an investor in gaining more money. They advise and manage a client's investments. This includes stocks, bonds, mutual funds, EFTs, and other investments.

    Their primary objective is to help clients increase their wealth by determining what investments are the best options for a particular client. They may also assist in asset allocation or dividing a client's investable assets into different asset classes.

  • Financial Consultant. A financial consultant is a professional that helps an individual or company build wealth. This often includes making investments or other transactions associated with the stock market.

    A financial consultant's main objective is to help clients develop comprehensive long-term financial strategies to increase their wealth. They are heavily involved in the buying and selling of investments. And turning complicated financial concepts into actionable strategies.

  • Dealer. A dealer is a financial professional that enables the trading of securities for themselves. They facilitate trading securities for themselves, an individual, or a company.

    Dealers also behave as self-governing entities to ensure the correct functioning of securities markets. Some dealers, also called primary dealers, also facilitate trades on behalf of the United States government.
