HISTORY OF THE CHEVY SILVERADO 1500 | Bill Walsh Superstore (2024)

The Chevy Silverado 1500 is perhaps one of the best-known trucks on the market. That's because this model comes with a durable design and rugged performance you just can't find elsewhere, creating a legacy of quality that truck owners have come to love. Below are some interesting facts to go along with the history of the Chevy Silverado 1500.

Fun Facts

• From 1960 to 1999, the Silverado 1500 was officially called the C/K.

• This pickup is one of GM's best-selling vehicles ever.

• The name "Silverado 1500" comes from one of the C/K's special trims that was used for years.

• The Silverado was the first truck to use hydroforming, a way of making lightweight, durable steel.

• It was the first truck to have a hybrid option, first introduced in 2004.

History

This light-duty truck was officially introduced in 1999, and it shares many similarities with its brother, the GMC Sierra. The Silverado 1500 came with a complete redesign in 1999, prompting the new name, and it had a distinct Quadrasteer system, new HVAC controls, and a revamped look.

The Silverado SS, a high-performance pickup available to the general public, is one notable variation introduced in 2003. This came with a 6.0-liter Vortec engine that was rated at 345 horsepower and paired with a four-speed transmission. All-wheel drive was adopted three years later, as well as a special Z60 performance suspension and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Today

The third and current generation shares many similarities with the second generation. Current models have EcoTec3 engine technology to improve performance and efficiency, as well as the upgraded Chevy MyLink touchscreen infotainment system. Smartphone connectivity is also available now, but the Silverado still uses many features found on the first models, like hydroforming.
