Here is where you can buy beautiful, traditional Hungarian houses cheap! (2024)

Since real estate prices in cities started skyrocketing, many people are considering moving to rural areas. Ormánság seems to be an ideal location for many.

If someone buys a house in the area, the costs can be relatively low, even with renovations. These are protected real estates, which means that owners can apply to get sums of money from the Folk Architecture Program (Népi Építészeti Program) if they restore the houses’ original, traditional beauty. But Home Renovation Support (Otthonfelújítási támogatás) can be taken out for any house, and the sum can be up to 3 million forints (EUR 8,227), writes hellovidek.hu.

In the area, many old but beautiful houses are up for sale. A house can cost 3–5 million forints (EUR 8,227–13,712). Fully renovated houses with modern heating systems and Styrofoam-insulated exteriors can be as cheap as 8–10 million forints (EUR 21,939–27,424).

The rustic look of the houses allows cheap solutions in the renovation process. A significant sum of money can be spared by using demolished building materials, bricks and building timber. This idea is both budget-friendly and eco-friendly. There are protected houses where it is highly advised to use demolished, old materials in the reconstruction and renovation process. Szaporcai Cifraház, for example, was renovated with this method.

Looking at various houses on websites advertising real estate, the prices and the state of the homes may vary significantly.

Looking at megveszlak.hu, a house in Drávacsehi built in 1940 costs 4,900,000 forints (EUR 13,437). The property has two rooms, 70 square metres, and the land is 5,620 square metres. In the same location, another house built in 2011 with four rooms costs 28,500,000 forints (EUR 78,158). This house has 260 square metres with a land of 3,956 square metres. A house with two rooms built in 1910 in Tésenfa costs 3,800,000 forints (EUR 10,421). The house has 65 square metres, and the land has 4,457 square metres. This property, however, looks very shabby and desperately needs to be renovated. On ingatlan.com, an unfinished house in Szaporca costs 4.2 million forints (EUR 11,518). Another house, built in 2011, costs 39.5 million forints, a shockingly higher price.

Villages, settlements, and towns in the northern side of Borsod County are getting really popular as well, thanks to low real estate prices. Read more about the topic HERE.
