The house of Gucci as we know it today was established in 1921 by Guccio Gucci as a leather goods/luggage store in Florence, Italy. Many of Guccio's Italian clients were local horse-riding aristocrats, and their demand for riding gear led Gucci to develop its unique Horsebit icon and many other symbols of equestrian origin. Mr. Gucci developed an understanding about how much the world of horses meant to the rich and privileged, and thus aspired to use equestrian imagery in many designs.

Inspired by a personal request by Grace Kelly in 1966, the now famous Flora silk print was created for the Monaco princess.
