The Miller process is rapid and simple, but it produces gold of only about 99.5 percent purity. The Wohlwill process increases purity to about 99.99 percent by electrolysis. In this process, a casting of impure gold is lowered into an electrolyte solution of hydrochloric acid and gold chloride.

With gold at over $1,300 an ounce, it is profitable to recycle gold *IF* you're able to get a large enough volume of high gold content equipment. Unfortunately, people within the industry also know this, so gold bearing items are a pretty competitive market.

The Refiner Heats the Sample

This mixture of gold and other additives is then heated and melted at a temperature between roughly 1000 and 12000 degrees Celsius.

The gold smelting process removes impurities from gold ore. These could be the original impurities found in gold deposits in the earth, or impurities added to gold in manufacturing.

There are two main methods of refining scrap gold; melting or chemicals. Traditional methods used centuries ago can still be used today, but the process of refining gold is difficult and can be dangerous. Real gold doesn't burn or get darker when heat is applied. If the piece of gold is real, the heat will melt the gold which is why gold can be molded and formed into different shapes without losing its color. Other metals like copper, iron, and brass change color and get darker when it is exposed to heat.

Despite this, in truth it is impossible to produce 100% pure gold based on current technical limits. Removing any tiny molecules of other material is not achievable, and would prove extremely expensive and difficult to even prove. This is why, in common terms, pure gold is 999 or 999.9 not 1,000 fineness.

Karats can be mixed, but this will result in an alloy which is an odd karat.

Most refiners offer an accountability and charge fees for various services. The accountability is the percentage of the overall gold recovered that you'll be paid on. Most refiners are in the Ninety-something percent range.

Once gold is sold for scrap, it is only for the purpose of being melted down and reused. It is these differences between the number of processes involved and the purpose of the sale, that cause the drastic change in gold value.

Mix a few drops of liquid Dawn dish detergent/soap in warm water. Add a tablespoon of Hydrogen Peroxide. Let the gold jewelry sit in the solution for about 15 to 20 minutes. Carefully brush the piece of a soft toothbrush, brushing outward.

If you'd like to disinfect your jewelry, you can use regular household isopropyl alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, as long as the jewelry is solid gold or platinum and is only set with diamond, ruby, or sapphire. Take care with any other kind of stones and use a gentler form of cleaning.
