Frequently Asked Questions

The emergency fund is included in all Pawp memberships and provides up to $3,000 in case of an unexpected, life-threatening vet emergency requiring immediate care. The fund is available one time per year for one emergency vet bill up to $3,000. There are no restrictions based on breed, age, or location. No restrictions based on pre-existing conditions. It offers coverage for up to 6 cats or dogsWith one easy monthly payment, you can sleep easy knowing your pet is covered and emergency care won’t be a financial burden. The Pawp Emergency Fund is an alternative to pet insurance and does not cover routine care or preventative health.

What makes the Pawp Emergency Fund different? Compared to traditional options, Pawp is an affordable pet insurance alternative for pet parents looking for financial protection in case of an unexpected vet emergency.

The Emergency Fund provides up to $3,000 toward one unexpected, life-threatening pet emergency per year. The emergency fund acts as a security blanket for those unexpected — and often financially crippling — situations where your pet requires immediate medical attention.

Emergencies

An emergency is defined as a life-threatening situation as confirmed by a Pawp veterinary professional, based on the signs and symptoms that the animal is exhibiting.

Emergencies include, but are not limited to:

  • Toxic ingestion
  • Choking & difficulty breathing
  • Severe blockages

The examples above are not an exhaustive list and every emergency should be deemed as such by Pawp's veterinary professional team via video call.

Pawp members should contact a Pawp veterinary professional by video conference immediately if they believe that the pet is experiencing an emergency. The pet must be visible within the video in order for a Pawp veterinary professional to determine if and to what extent there is a life-threatening emergency. This is determined based on the signs and symptoms exhibited by the pet that would qualify as an emergency. In extreme circ*mstances, Pawp may waive video requirements, but this is based solely on the discretion of the Pawp Medical Review team.

Read the complete emergency fund rules & regulations here.

If you suspect your pet is having an emergency, you should call the Pawp vet team to determine whether the issue qualifies for the emergency fund. We have this rule in place for the following reasons:

  1. In case of a life-threatening emergency, it's in the best interest of your pet to receive a professional medical opinion as soon as possible. The Pawp vet care team is there to help provide first aid vet advice and emergency vet triage 24 hours a day, and they respond within 2 minutes.
  2. To ensure that the Emergency Fund is used for its intended purpose.
  3. To protect the integrity of our service.

Ultimately, it is at the discretion of the vet care team to determine if your pet needs immediate care and qualifies for the emergency fund. Each situation and pet is unique, and determining the emergency depends heavily on breed, age, weight, and other characteristics. You will not have access to the Emergency Fund if the pet has been admitted prior to contacting the vet care team for funds.

Yes, there is a 14-day wait period before your Emergency Fund becomes available for use. We'll send you an email notification when your waiting period is over and your Emergency Fund is available for activation. The fund won't cover a vet emergency that exists at the time of sign-up, nor will it cover or reimburse any emergencies incurred before the completion of the wait period. The wait period cannot be modified or adjusted in any way.

No, the Emergency Fund can only be used once per year per membership. Funds are restricted to a one-time payout, regardless of the amount, up to $3,000. If your emergency vet bill is less than $3,000, the remaining amount will be forfeited once you choose to use the emergency fund for that particular bill. Your $3,000 Emergency Fund will renew on an annual basis.

Upon completion of the emergency treatment for the pet, you'll be asked to provide payment for the care by the clinic. We do not provide this payment directly to the clinic, so as the pet owner you will be responsible for providing payment for your pet's emergency care.

  • To apply for reimbursem*nt, please complete navigate to the "Protect" tab in your Pawp app and complete the Emergency Fund Application within 14 days of discharge. Please make sure to submit up-to-date contact information for your clinic. Incorrect information may cause delays in processing your application. We will review your application and if approved, you'll be provided reimbursem*nt via e-check or ACH payment.

In nearly every instance, Pawp does require a live face-to-face video call to assess your pet's immediate needs and the situation at hand. In certain extreme situations, Pawp may choose to waive the video call requirement, but this is at the sole discretion of the medical review team and after they've reviewed all relevant documents and context.

The Emergency Fund provides up to $3,000 towards one pet emergency per year. The Emergency Fund acts as a safety net for those unexpected, financially crippling emergency situations where your pet requires immediate medical attention.
