Back General Motors Co. traces its roots back to 1908. GM has 10 joint ventures, two wholly owned foreign enterprises and more than 58,000 employees in China. GM and its joint ventures sell passenger cars and commercial vehicles under the Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet, Wuling and Baojun brands. In 2017, GM delivered more than 4 million vehicles in China.
Over the past two decades, GM has witnessed, participated in and benefited from the development opportunities brought by China’s reform and opening up. By integrating our global resources with the local expertise of our partners, we have established unmatched capabilities in design, engineering, manufacturing and R&D in China. We have also built an integrated value chain that includes automotive telematics, automotive financing, aftersales and insurance. In the midst of today’s transportation transformation, GM’s vision of a future with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion is addressing the challenges associated with mobility. To get to that future, GM is at the forefront of developing and deploying leading-edge technologies in the areas of alternative propulsion, autonomous driving, connectivity and sharing. China will play an essential role in driving us to the future. GM is committed to not only introducing exciting products to meet customers’ evolving needs, but also bringing the best electrification solutions and advanced technologies to benefit our customers in China.
GM believes in an all-electric future. GM is on track to roll out 10 new energy vehicles (NEVs) by 2020 in China, and will go one step further by doubling that number over the following three years. By the end of August 2018, GM’s NEVs in China had logged more than 100 million electric kilometers. To support the steady rollout of NEVs, GM is localizing battery pack assembly at SAIC-GM’s new Shanghai Battery Assembly Plant. GM is also dedicated to leading in battery technology. GM China’s battery lab has established a strong in-house battery research and development capability and expertise to design, validate and test batteries to ensure the safety, durability and reliability of our electric vehicles.
Connectivity is another industry trend. Shanghai OnStar, a joint venture of GM and SAIC Motor, is the leader in automotive telematics in China. In addition, GM has been at the forefront of driving Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) deployment in China, working with local partners and sharing its achievements. In 2016, GM became one of the first vehicle manufacturers to demonstrate the interoperability of V2X applications in the country. In 2017, GM successfully demonstrated its Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) capability on public roads in Shanghai. GM is also the co-author of China’s first V2X application layer industry standard, which was published in 2017.
GM believes autonomous driving will help save lives by reducing crashes, over 90 percent of which are caused by human errors. GM has a two-pronged strategy for zero crashes through an evolutionary path with technologies such as Super Cruise, and a revolutionary path led by Cruise autonomous vehicles. Super Cruise, the industry’s first hands-free driver-assist technology for the highway, was made available in the U.S. on the Cadillac CT6 in 2017. GM introduced the fourth-generation of self-driving Cruise AV autonomous vehicles, which have no driver, steering wheel and pedals, in January 2018. GM is fully focused on the commercialization of autonomous vehicle technology at scale in the U.S. in 2019.
Over the past two decades, GM has been working closely with Chinese partners to build a strong capability in localized manufacturing and research and development.
