As of January 2021, there were a total of 3,192 GameStop outlets in the United States, which is a decrease of about 450 stores compared to one year earlier. A large number of these stores were located in some of the more populated states, such as Texas, California, and Florida. Worldwide, there were approximately 4,800 GameStop stores.

In 2020, GameStop was the leading choice among consumers in the United States for buying video games in-store, followed by Walmart and Best Buy. When buying digital video games online, however, GameStop ranked third. The option used the most when spending money on video games online was Amazon, followed by Sony’s PlayStation Store.

A common misconception that exists among video games is that the medium is geared towards or meant for children and teenagers. While there are many people under 18 years of age that partake in this hobby, the largest share of gamers in the United States were in fact between 18 and 34 years old: in 2020, roughly four in ten U.S. consumers within this age group played video games.
