From the Pulpit: Nothing can separate the believer from the love of God (2024)
God created us to have relationships. A key aspect of a healthy relationship is love. Love causes a person to thrive in life. No matter how great a relationship you have with another person, their love will fail from time to time. However, everyone who has a personal relationship with the Lord can be confident that his love never fails. Romans 8:35-39 teaches that it is impossible for the believer to be separated from Christ and his love.
Nothing can stop Christ’s love or separate the believer from his love (Romans 8:35). Believers face various kinds of intense adversity. They face tribulation (affliction or trouble), but tribulation cannot separate us from the love of Christ. Believers face distress (anguish, hardship or calamity), persecution, famine (hunger), exposure, danger (2 Cor 11:26) and they may even face execution. Execution will take your life, but it will not separate you from the love of Christ. Paul personally knows that these things cannot separate him from the love of God. In 2 Corinthians 11:23-27, Paul shares about the many adversities he faced. These adversities did not separate him from the love of God. Christians will suffer and face persecution but they will never be separated from God’s love.
The adversity believers experience is nothing new (Romans 8:36). Do not be surprised when you suffer for Christ’s sake. This happened to the godly saints in the Old Testament and the New Testament (Psalm 44:22; Hebrews 11:36-38; 2 Timothy 3:12). Nothing that enters our life is able or sufficient to separate us from God's love demonstrated at the cross.
God’s love allows the believer to be a conqueror in adversity (Romans 8:37). God walks with us through every adversity and hardship. We do not merely survive or squeak by. We do not just succeed. We are more than conquerors! In Christ, we are super-conquerors. This verse emphasizes the absolute and overwhelming victory that God gives to the believer through Christ. Believers are supremely victorious because of their relationship with Jesus Christ.
God allows nothing to separate us from his love (Romans 8:38-39). Paul considers some powerful threats in the universe, but none of them can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Don’t let suffering cause you to doubt God’s love. Suffering is designed to draw you closer to Christ and makes you more like him. You have nothing to fear. You are secure in God’s love. Paul could say this because he endured a multitude of afflictions and nothing separated him from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Paul considers the extremities of God’s creation. Nothing in life or death can stop God from loving us. Angels and rulers (principalities, demons) cannot separate us from God’s love. Nothing in the present and nothing in the future can triumph over the love of God. No power can separate you from the love of God and neither can the heights of space nor the depths of the oceans. In case you think you have an exception, Paul ends his list with “nor anything else in all creation.” This covers anything else you can possibly think of. Nothing can sever the believer’s relationship with God. The believer will face persecution from natural and supernatural forces, but none of them will prevail. Nothing can stop God’s plan and purpose for you.
What should you do with this wonderful passage? First, you should make sure these wonderful truths apply to you. This magnificent promise of God’s love is only for those who have a personal relationship with him made possible through faith in Jesus Christ. If you know Christ as savior, you can be confident that God’s love for you is unchanging. You must meditate on and rehearse this marvelous passage in your mind so that you will be convinced of this truth. As you face suffering, hardship, and persecution, allow these trials to drive you to the loving arms of God.
Paul could say this because he endured a multitude of afflictions and nothing separated him from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Paul considers the extremities of God's creation. Nothing in life or death can stop God from loving us. Angels and rulers (principalities, demons) cannot separate us from God's love.
There isn't anything that we have done, should have done, or that's been done to us that can keep God from loving us. His love is constant and unstoppable. Know that the Lord is with you today and loves you beyond measure!
God's dominion supersedes every earthly and heavenly administration. His authority overrules anything bound on earth. No existing management or power can take us from God's love. God's love upholds us no matter the oppression we face or how attacked we may feel.
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
There is no condemnation for those in Christ, and nothing will ever be able to separate us from His love. Having believed the gospel, we now live in the Spirit of God. That allows us to call God Abba Father. We suffer with Christ, and we suffer along with all creation while we wait for God to reveal us as His sons.
No charge or accusation made against us can stand, because God has provided for our justification and Christ is interceding for us. Paul makes two lists of all of the things in the universe that cannot separate us from God's love for us in Christ. Hard things will happen, indeed.
[38] For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, [39] Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. For your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt. Your lips have spoken lies, and your tongue mutters wicked things. No one calls for justice; no one pleads his case with integrity.
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God's love.
Angels, demons, and powers are all spiritual beings much stronger than I am. Yet, as strong as they are, they cannot separate me from God's love. And if they cannot, then neither can any human. In fact, nothing in all of creation can separate me from God's love.
God's love surpasses all human relationships we could ever have. Humans are imperfect and so is their love. God, however, provides perfect love because He is the definition of love itself and adores us more than anyone on Earth.
In Roman's 8:38-39, Paul professes that “neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Following the arrest of Jesus, Peter denied knowing him three times, but after the third denial, he heard the rooster crow and recalled the prediction as Jesus turned to look at him. Peter then began to cry bitterly. This final incident is known as the Repentance of Peter.
The Apostle Paul said in Romans 8:38-39 'For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. '
His point is that no matter what you put on the list, it is not powerful enough to separate believers (those who have placed their faith in Jesus and His sacrifice) from the love of God. There is absolutely nothing we can do to cause God to reject us. We are accepted by Him unconditionally.
Believers triumph entirely through His power, the power of Him Who loved us so much that He gave His life for us that we might have life in Him… life abundant and overcoming. Through Him - Through Jesus. Spurgeon comments "Jesus is the representative man for his people.
Romans 8:18-39 reminds us to look at the world from a different perspective than most. We live in an enchanted world. God has made a good world and intervenes in it regularly. It's easy to despair in the face of ISIS, natural disasters, and finals.
Romans 8 is one of the most loved chapters in all of Scripture. Paul begins and ends this passage with statements about the absolute security of those who are in Christ. First, there is no condemnation, at all, for those in Christ. Last, nothing will ever be able to separate us from God's love for us in Christ.
