Are you really committed to flying into either?
In the course of dozens of flights between the U.S. and Florence in recent years I have found it much more convenient to make the change elsewhere. Munich is now my favorite airport for changing from the transAtlantic flight to the puddle jumper to Florence and back again. But I really prefer Paris and Frankfurt (and even Schipol and Zaventem) to either Rome or Milan. Just about the only airport I don't prefer to Rome or Milan is Heathrow.
One of the strange phenomena I have noticed in the past few years is that for some reason a tremendous percentage of flights from Milan that are supposed to land at Peretola wind up being diverted to Bologna or Pisa, which means adding an unpleasant wait for a bus, and then an unpleasant bus trip, on top of two plane trips. Why it is that more flights from Milan seem to get get diverterd than flights from Paris or Frankfurt or wherever is a mystery to me.
Of course if you are trying to get to something in or around Milan or Rome, that changes everything, but if not, not.
I'm curious to see what others have to say.
