Flight awards on American

Flight awards are available for as low as 7,500 miles each way plus any applicable taxes and carrier-imposed fees. Mileage levels vary by date and flight. During booking, the applicable award level will be displayed based on availability.

Keep in mind, you can cancel and reinstate your miles at no charge. You can change an eligible trip online in just a few steps. While you may have to pay the difference, there are no change fees for award tickets. Flight awards have no blackout dates and are available on all American Airlines marketed and operated flights.

Use the award chart to learn where mileage award pricing starts for a one-way award on American Airlines for trips originating in North America.

What you need to know

  • Miles shown are for one-way travel.
    • For each one-way award redeemed for travel within the United States and Canada (including Alaska and Hawaii), a maximum of three segments are permitted.
    • For all other destinations (including Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands), a maximum of four segments are permitted.
  • Book a one-way trip or combine awards for round-trip or multi-city travel.
  • Each award is subject to taxes and carrier-imposed fees starting from $5.60 per person, per award.
    • Taxes and fees vary by trip origin and destination.
    • The exact amount of taxes and carrier-imposed fees that apply will appear when searching for a particular itinerary.
    • The name on the credit or debit card must match the name on the AAdvantage® account from which miles are being deducted.
  • Flights booked for an unaccompanied minor are subject to an additional service fee (plus tax, where applicable). This fee also covers siblings on the same flight.
