What is the FTM cryptocurrency used for?
FTM is the native cryptocurrency of Fantom, a decentralised finance (DeFi) blockchain solution that hostsa range of cross-chain bridges, yield optimisers, NT platforms, lending and borrowing protocols. Popular dApps supported by the network include Curve Finance, Solidly and SushiSwap.
Fantom (FTM), released to the public in 2018 by the South Korean computer scientist Dr Ahn Byung Ik, is a smart contract solution for the deployment of digital assets and dApps. From May 2022, Professor Bernhard Scholz of the University of Sydney will join Fantom as chief research officer.
According to DappRadar, the Geist liquidity market protocol has the highest trading volume of all Fantom-based dApps, having traded $767.5bnover a recent 30-day period.
Fantom’s technology stack includes a directed acyclic graph ledger design and a bespoke consensus algorithm called Lachesis. Everything is designed around scalability, fast transaction times and security, commonly known as the ‘blockchain trilemma’.
FTM has shown impressive utility since its initial coin offering (ICO) in 2018, with a thriving dApp environment and a solid staking community. Staking rewards generally average around 4%, but can go as high as 13% for a 12-month lock-up period.
FTM has also acted as a governance tokensince the governance system was introduced in early 2021. Typical governance proposals relate to staking requirements, slashing refunds and ecosystem updates.
The Fantom blockchain: speed and fees
Using statistics from ftmscan.com, we can see that the Fantomblockchain enjoys fast block times of under one second and gas fees at a fraction of a cent (a recent reading was under 500 gwei, roughly equivalent to $0.001).
Daily transactions are currently under 820,000, down from more than 1.75 million in September 2021. However, unique addresses continue to climb, rising from under 400,000 in August 2021 to more than 2.7million in March 2022.
How is the Fantom (FTM) cryptocurrency secured?
The FTM cryptocurrency is secured via a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus method using the lightweight Lachesis algorithm. The Explorer shows that 64 validators are currently securing the network. In comparison, Ethereum is currently hosting 6,161 validators (although this number does fluctuate significantly) while the more modest Avalanche network hosts 1,208.
A minimum bondage of 3,175,000 FTM is required to become a Fantom PoS validator. A fairly healthy total of 50% of FTM circulation is currently dedicated to PoS network validation.
The Lachesis protocol delegates validation processes to the individual nodes executing the transaction, rather than relaying the process to a miner. Since processing power is distributed fairly across the entire network, ledger weight is greatly reduced, allowing for faster transaction times. The Nano digital currency uses a similar process.
