If you only got 30 seconds:

Here’s the bitter truth.

When it comes to clothes, quality, affordability, and sustainability rarely stand close.

It’s either: 1. ethical, high-quality, and steeply-priced

OR

2. affordable yet made in a dubious way that probably trashes the planet and hurts the workers.

Well, it doesn’t have to be that way. And some brands are living proof that fashion can be sustainable and fairly-priced.

One of these brands is Organic Basics.

1/4 Who Are Organic Basics

Created in Denmark by a group of eco-conscious friends, Organic Basics specializes in creating minimalist eco-friendly essentials for men and women: underwear, tops, activewear, sweat suits and accessories.

To be completely honest, no fashion brand is perfect, but some are more perfect than others. Organic Basic definitely falls into the latter category.

“When we say sustainability is our core mission we don’t mean that sustainability is nice to have – we mean that it’s the only way we act.”

So what makes Organic basics stand out from the fashion crowd?

Everything!

Organic Basics packaging is made of sustainably sourced/recycled materials.

Here are just a few things:

  • Absolute transparency. There’s nothing worse than digging through the company’s website in search of their sustainability practices. At best, you’ll find bits of information here and there. At worse, nada. Organic Basics has everything laid out for you. You can check out details about its partner- factories, extensive information on fibers used in the production, a full yearly impact report of the company, and its environmental activism. Seriously, go check it out. It’s impressive.
  • Carbon-neutral supply chain. Organic Basic is offsetting 100% of its carbon footprint.
  • Constant growth. Organics Basics admits that there are always things you could improve. For example, it’s not always possible to trace the full cycle of organic cotton. But the brand is constantly setting new goals, which it’s likely to achieve judging from the progress the company has made since the very start in 2015.

2/4 Organic Basics Underwear Review

Disclaimer: I got the product from the manufacturer free of charge in exchange for my honest and candid review. Any opinions expressed in the post are my own.

While I don’t have multiple T-shirts and jeans in my wardrobe, there’s something else I “sin” with – underwear.

I’m not doing laundry very often, and I’m not too fond of handwashing. As a result, I’ve got quite a few pairs of underwear that get me through to the laundry day.

So, when good people from Organic Basics reached out to me and asked if I wanted to try out briefs and the triangle bra from their Organic Cotton collection, I was more than excited.

I got the parcel on February 14, and I’ve tested the undies from Organic Basics for two weeks now. Here’s what I think about them.

Packaging

You know how it happens. A company is ranting about sustainability and planting trees, but when the order arrives, it is plastic wrapped in plastic.

Luckily, that’s not the case with Organic Basics.

My order arrived in a neat box made of FSC certified carton. Inside – two packages made of recycled materials.

The best part? You can re-use the boxes for storing small items (which is what I do now).

Fabric

The triangle bra and 2-packs briefs are made from GOTS certified, handpicked organic cotton, and produced in the partner factory in Izmir, Turkey.

My first impression of the fabric was that it’s soft, sturdy, and well-made (2 weeks after wearing the items, the good impression remains).

The items do contain 5% of elastane, which gives them a comfortable stretch. I believe it will also help them retain shape after a while.

Made from GOTS certified, handpicked organic cotton, this set is incredibly soft and cozy.

Color

Organic cotton undies are available in black and nude. I’m definitely a nude type.

Besides, the summer is coming, and nude is invisible under white T-shirts and dresses.

I really love the pinkish hue the color has. It pairs great with my pale skin contrary to a more traditional yellow nude that always gives me a sick look.

Comfort & Fit

The triangle bra from Organic Basics re-introduced me to the world of bras.

The truth is that for the last 2 years, I didn’t wear a bra at all (except for the sport ones). I’ve got a very small frame and non-existent cup size, so there was literally no need to wear anything.

But, at the beginning of February, I got some happy news – I found out that I’m pregnant. My body is currently rapidly changing. So now, I finally understand women who need extra support in the chest area.

Nude underwear is truly essential for every wardrobe. Especially in summer.

The cups are really supportive despite their triangle shape, and I even have a little extra space on the sides – perfect since my breasts will continue growing with pregnancy.

As to the briefs, they have a great wide waistband, which can even give you a slight lower tummy control. A bit of elastane can create a pretty visible panty line, so check out the Invisible collection made of recycled nylon if that’s something that troubles you.

I did yoga in this organic cotton set several times, and it was a pleasant experience.

That said if you’re planning to sweat a lot, check out the SilverTech collection (available for both men and women). It stays fresh longer and doesn’t require wash after every sweaty session (yay to saving water and energy).

Sizing

I am in-between sizes XS and S for both the briefs and the bra, but I reckoned that organic cotton needs to have some give, so I sized down to XS.

I’m glad I did. Otherwise, the bra cups would definitely be too big.

If you’re in-between sizes, I’d suggest downsizing.

3/4 Organic Basics Underwear: Pros & Cons

Here’s what I like most about the Organic Basics underwear:

  • truly eco-friendly & non-toxic – when it comes to sustainability and ethical practices, Organic Basics talks the talk AND walks the walk. It doesn’t happen often;
  • soft & comfortable – no pinching, irritation, or digging into the skin;
  • beautiful nude hue – I love the pinkish hue of their organic cotton essentials;
  • affordable – 2-packs briefs for under $40 and under $50 bra – more than reasonable considering the fact that each and every worker is paid living wages, offered perks, and treated as humans;
  • a chance to buy climate credits – not exactly related to underwear, but I believe this is an amazing opportunity for a thoughtful gift to yourself or your eco-conscious friends/family.

I personally can’t think of anything I’d improve about the undies I received, really.

But you might want to keep in mind that:

  • Briefs from Organic Cotton collection create a panty line.
  • If you have a really small frame and breast size, you might want to choose TENCEL™ Lite Bralette instead of the Triangle bra. It seems less supportive (though, I doubt you’re concerned about support) and designed for smaller breasts.
  • You might want to downsize if you’re in-between sizes (based on my personal experience with Organic Cotton underwear).
