Unlike direct purchase of cryptos, investing in an ETF is subscribing to units or securities issued by a regulated fund --- a feature that most think is a kosher trade. However, some of the Indian banks refuse to remit funds overseas if the money is invested in cryptos or offshore funds and pooled vehicles that invest in cryptos and track the prices of bitcoin and other digital currencies.
In early trade on Saturday, Bitcoin was trading over 5% higher at $42,003. Also, as per reports, over $4 billion of funds have flowed into the new spot bitcoin ETFs, particularly to products operated by BlackRock and Fidelity.
It is up to the banking regulator and the policymakers to decide what to they want to do about it: Burn the train down by disallowing us to park some money in these borderless instruments via RBI’s LRS scheme or derail it by taxing hard and heavy or jump onto it with sufficient guardrails and regulations or better still use the underlying technology of blockchain, distributed ledger and smart contracts among others for responsible finance and zillions of other applications
