Form 1040NR, U.S. Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return can be filed electronically using UltraTax CS. Extensions for Form 1040NR can also be filed electronically. Follow the same procedures for preparing 1040 returns or extensions for electronic filing to prepare Form 1040NR for electronic filing.
- The IRS does not allow electronic filing for Form 1040NR-EZ or Dual status returns. Those returns must be filed on paper.
- 2019 and prior Form 1040NR must be filed on paper.
Note: In UltraTax CS, use the File the return electronically if not marked for e-file in the prior year (Screen ELF) checkbox in Setup > 1040 Individual > Other Return Options > Other tab > to mark all 1040NR clients. Since the IRS does not allow Form 1040NR-EZ returns to be e-filed, this option does not mark the File this return electronically field for 1040NR-EZ clients.
