sven, FYI, I have done a lot of road trips in Brazil, not just in Bahia, but Sergipe, grande S.P. to Santa Catarina, to the mountains in S.P. state and to Rio, most of Minas, Brasilia, Goiania, Pernambuco, Maranhao--- and the roads, drivers, attitudes and road conditions are generally some of the worst I've encountered anywhere in my travels on 5 continents.
People like the idea of being able to stop when and where they like (the convenience of having a car), but don't take into consideration that there's a lot of what could be considered boring countryside in between a lot of destinations.
There was a post awhile back on TA from a tourist who recounted, essentially, that they got lost (into a favela and elsewhere), had a flat in the middle of nowhere, drove on potholes, etc, etc--but had a great time. If you have a similar attitude, enjoy the adventure. If not, relax and take the bus.
