IXL is a multi-subject learning platform covering math and English for kids from the start of their education right the way through to the end of school. It also covers science, social studies and Spanish for part of this age range. IXL is a platform firmly committed to education with associated brands, including Education.com, Rosetta Stone, Wyzant, and ABCya, as separate products under its umbrella.

Kids receive considerable practice adapted to their achievements while teachers and parents observe relevant and easy-to-read feedback on their kids' progress. IXL has the potential to be a consistent and effective learning companion throughout each learner's educational journey.

IXL has different plans you can pick for learning. You pay for each child who uses it. If you want to add another kid, it costs $4 extra every month or $40 extra for the whole year.

Single Subject (Math or Language Arts): $9.95 a month or $79 for a year.

Combo package (Math and Language Arts): $15.95 a month or $129 for a year.

Core Subjects (Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies): $19.95 a month or $159 for a year.

You can test some of the exercises for free before deciding. Schools can purchase a classroom license based on the number of students they want to use IXL.

Is it good for learning?

IXL lets you support your kids' learning across math and English using a single platform and subscription. Its coverage stretches from Pre-K right through to high school level. (For the UK, reception to year 13).

The app's mappings to different state standards and other countries' curricula are unmatched, which provides a helpful structure for homeschooling parents — especially when you factor in the preprepared skill plans.

We found every question clear and visually appealing. Entering the answers was easy without ambiguity. The level of progression within each activity is consistently well judged so that kids naturally progress without explicit instruction from the app or a teacher, although such support is also available to kids struggling with helpful examples and diagrams.

The questions in the app have an associated button to read them out, helping to ensure younger kids and those with literacy difficulties can still practise. A recent update extended this audio support across the age range, but parents can choose whether it is active for kids in grade 3 and above.

IXL displays some first-party links to relevant and associated services, such as the Wyzant tutor finding service. These appear only in the parent area; you can turn them off. The apps and web app do not display third-party ads at any time.

The Pros of using IXL Math

  • The little-and-often learning approach is an effective strategy
  • Learning games and question-and-answer activities provide variety
  • Guidance and support materials are great for homeschooling
  • Complete coverage from Pre-K to Grade 12 in math and English

Benefits for Students

Kids can log in to their IXL accounts using an IXL LaunchCard, making the process easy and not relying on memorising passwords and user names. These printables display a QR code for quick account access through any device with a camera.

Kids have plenty of opportunities with IXL to practise using gamelike activities. These games are provided by the popularABCyaplatform, which normally requires a subscription to access ad-free and without on-screen clutter.

These are fun, colourful games that make practice fun for kids and allow them to keep learning when they have completed their daily practice with the main IXL activities.

The structured learning activities use adaptive learning technology. As kids use the app, it learns what they know and adjusts the questions it delivers to extend their understanding gradually. When kids struggle, they'll see more of those question types; when they answer easily, they'll see fewer.

One of the things I liked most was the choice presented to kids. While IXL will guide them through their personalised pathway, kids still have choices about what to cover next or revisit. Research shows that kids learn better and more willingly when they feel they have agency over their tasks, and IXL's approach fits in well with that.

Benefits for Teachers

IXL's features feel designed to support teachers rather than supplant them. The self-marking and adaptive tasks help with formative assessment by identifying areas of weakness in individuals and groups. The ongoing data recording turns time-consuming grading into a continuous background task, making it more insightful and less demanding.

The time teachers gain from not marking, assessing, grading, and planning will let them increase the time they put into their lessons. More stimulating and creative activities are possible when teachers are free from endless admin.

None of this locks teachers into IXL's way of doing things. Teachers can take advantage of the personalised pathways where suitable but deviate when their experience tells them a different approach better serves an individual's needs.

Benefits for Parents

IXL provides more resources to support parents than is usual among educational apps. A helpful step-by-step PDF guide ensures you understand the platform's basics and can get your children engaged in learning quickly. A comprehensive set of ready-made Skill Plans helps you

choose the best learning approach for your child's needs. You can also download printable resources to take the learning offline and keep kids familiar with pen and paper.

The parent area of your IXL account helps monitor your kids' progress and see the exercises and activities they use. If parents access the activities in some competing apps, they will harm the app's tracking data. In IXL, parents can access the exercises through their dashboard, but any answers attempted do not contribute to the assessment data.

As well as providing practice exercises, IXL provides instructional resources to help learners progress. These videos are a great opportunity for parents to support their kids as they learn.

Watch them with your kids to brush up on your understanding and see how best to explain the concepts to your kids. A good tip is to use the parent area of your account to work through any associated exercises. This way, you can support your kids, and they can then move on to their accounts when they are confident to go it alone.

Our reviewer has these suggestions for the app.An option to allow answers to automatically submit on entry rather than tapping an enter button would feel more natural for some questions. The audio support is synthesised, which, while clear, is a bit robotic sounding.

Final Verdict: IXL Math Review

IXL is a popular and well-established platform for learning math and English. We think its success is thoroughly deserved with its breadth and depth of content, organised structure, and personalised approach exceeding those of competing platforms. We have awarded IXL five stars in this review
