Can you get into Harvard through donation? ›

It's not $5 million. It's $10 million or more — from someone with an established, preexisting relationship with the school (not from a parent with no ties to Harvard whose child is — surprise — applying next year. And even $10 million will not guarantee your child's case for admission to Harvard.

Even a big donation to a college can't always solidify a spot for a student, admissions consultants say. And yet, big money isn't exactly silent in the process either.

In fiscal year 2022, Harvard received current use gifts from alumni, foundations, and others totaling $505 million, representing approximately 9% of operating revenues. Support for the University comes from donations of all sizes; more than 75% of gifts in fiscal year 2022 averaged $155 per donor.

Can you get a full scholarship to Harvard? Harvard does not offer any merit-based aid, and no full-ride scholarships. However, they do meet 100% of students' demonstrated financial need. So, if you have high need, such as an auto-zero EFC on the FAFSA, you might qualify for almost a full ride.

If you don't pass their SAT/ACT and GPA requirements, they'll likely reject you without much consideration. To have the best shot of getting in, you should aim for the 75th percentile, with a 1580 SAT or a 35 ACT. You should also have a 4.18 GPA or higher.

Be cautious of overloading your schedule: Harvard would rather see a high GPA with 4 AP courses each year than a low GPA and a daunting 8 AP courses. Consider your AP, honors, and regular options carefully each semester based upon your own self-knowledge, schedule flexibility, and course offerings.

Ivy Leagues are not looking for applicants who have participated in dozens of extracurriculars, and they discourage dabbling in many activities. They prefer you dig deep into a subject, dedicate significant time to it, and use this experience to help the school propel you into a world-changing career.

You can avoid high debt

If you pick an affordable college, you're less likely to be burdened with high debt. Borrowing less now will leave you with more money for other things you might want to do eventually, like buy a home, take the vacation of a lifetime or start a family.

Donations and gifts can hamper the goals of a company

While supporting and donating to important causes is a great thing, the cash cost that organizations face with these outreach efforts can leave them with limited funding for other priorities.

Donating to charity is a major mood-booster. The knowledge that you're helping others is hugely empowering and, in turn, can make you feel happier and more fulfilled.
