Depths of Mementos (2024)

"The Prison of Regression is representative to the collective desires of humanity. They wished to be chained down, surrender their cognition, and neglect the world around them... These feebleminded commonfolk will make your "social reform" all for naught. The shared heart of the masses has fallen into an excess of indolence and transformed into a prison. Thus... the only suitable end for them is to perish within the prison they created for themselves."

—Holy Grail, Persona 5

The Depths of Mementos, also known as the Prison of Sloth,Prison of Regression, Prison of Acedia, or theQliphoth World,is a location in Persona 5. It is the bottommost area of Mementos. This is the eighth and final Palace of Persona 5, and the penultimate Palace of Persona 5 Royal, if Takuto Maruki's Confidant is maxed.

Appearances[]

Profile[]

As it is considered a proper Palace instead of a part of Mementos' default paths, the layout here is structured, and the Reaper will not appear. Despite this, in Royal, all EXP and Money bonuses that are obtained from Jose's Stamps apply here.

The Depths sharethesame security meter as the first eight paths ofMementos, but if the party makes the Shadows aggressive in the Depths by raising their awareness high enough, the effects will be carried to the upper levels. The Security Level of Mementos, during December 24th, can only be lowered if Shadows in the Depths are defeated in an ambush attack; ambushing Shadows from the first sevenlevelswill not affect it. This correlates to how Mementos isn't affected by a few intruders, as stated by Morgana. However, the Shadows will still flee in fear if the party is much stronger than them.If the security level reaches the red zone (90% to 99% or 100% in Royal), the background will appear more distorted and become pale white in certain areas.

On top of all that, due to avoiding detection in the real world, if the Security Level does reach the peak, the Phantom Thieves will not be forced to halt exploration and flee. And once they reach the Qliphoth World, the Security Levelis reset to 0%.

Final Heist: Mementos[]

On December 23rd, the Phantom Thieves discover that the public's cognition has severelytaken a turn for the worse as their efforts of changing the heart of Masayoshi Shido weredenied and covered up while popularity of Shido reaches near-cultish levels despite previously capable of inflicting doubt amongst the public. Furthermore, Sae Niijima tells the the Phantom Thieves that the police are prepared to arrest them at any time possible. Therefore, the group resolves to take the public's Treasure on the next day, December 24th,so that they come back to their senses, as their eighth and true final heist.

The game forcibly sends the protagonist into Mementos and prohibits them from going to the overworld due to the Thievestrying to avoid detection by law enforcement: the deadline for a few days until the re-arrest is shown in all areas of Mementos.Should the protagonist attempt to exit Mementos, Ryujiwill be shocked about thisandMakotostates that they should avoid leaving Mementos, as thepolice could come after them at any point. However, the protagonist is still able totemporarily leave to shop with Takemi or IwaiwhenHaru andYusuke agree that the shops necessary are the only places they will go to, afterFutabapoints out that the inability to replenish their supplies could potentially jeopardize their heist. If the protagonist says they worry too much,Annwill reply that nobody can ever be too cautious, before saying that they will be done for if the police do catch them this time. Ryuji then states indirectly that, until they can figure out what to do in regards to Mementos, they cannot go out anymore.

AnyMementos requeststhat haven't been completed by the end of December 22nd can no longer be accessed on that date, due to the targets' Shadows disappearing into the Depths' prison. This is stated by a confused Futaba, who says this had never happened before. However, Ryuji and Yusuke believe there is no time to deal with individual criminals, and that it is better to have the lowest amount of hindrances as possible.

If the group has not already made it to the bottommost area they could access during Shido's Palace, they will have to travel from the deepest area they have to reach this point. The door at the end of the Path of Sheriruth will then open up, allowing the party to descend towards the very depths of Mementos. Its entrance is the Path of Iweleth, consisting of one area. The area beyond that is blocked by a giant fossil-like door, which lets Shadows in, but prevents them from getting out. This area is dark blue and blood-red with large finger-like bones jutting from the sides of the railway tracks, which consist of bones and wood. The many trains that pass through Mementosall stop there, before the Shadows walk out of them and through the door.

While the protagonist is unable to advance time any further while exploring the depths, Caroline (who is initially shocked about the protagonist attempting to avoid the imminent ruin mentioned last evening, before she reluctantly realized that it is her and Justine's duty to guide inmates in theirrehabilitation)will provide free healing at the entrance to Mementos and the entranceof the Mementos Depths.

The Depths take the form of a prison resembling a mixture of structures made of rock and iron, as well as what appears to be the carcasses and skeletons of massive creatures in the background. The rock pillars consisting the terrain of the Depths are printed with marks resembling butterflies, and if one breaks a container (resembling golden cages just like the objects from upper Mementos), blue butterflies emerge within it. Tile-based security puzzles block further progress until they are solved. In order to solve these puzzles, the protagonist must interact with the panel, which activates the tile puzzle. When the puzzles are activated, the panel and the floor lights up in yellow. In order the solve the puzzle, the floor must be walked over until all of its lights become blue. The panel must then be interacted with, removing the barricade and allowing progress deeper into the prison complex. Later on, some panels are already blue by default, and deeper into the complex, the puzzles will reset themselves after a 10-step limit. Two will require an extra red disk to open an empty room so the puzzle can be cleared, which was respectively guarded by a mid-boss (an Abaddon in the regular version, replaced by a pair of Thrones in Royal) and a series of smaller puzzles.

The Shadows in the Depths take the form of prison guards in black or red uniforms and wear white hoods and masks with turquoise sunglasses, while carrying a baton in their hands. There are numerous cells with imprisoned members of the general public, who are actually comfortable inside, and try to convince the party to give up, with some inviting them to join them inside. Deeper down, they encounter the Shadows of four of the targets they supposedly reformed; Suguru Kamoshida, Ichiryusai Madarame, Junya Kaneshiro and Masayoshi Shido, with the exception of Kunikazu Okumuradue to being murdered by Akechi. Just like the rest of the masses, even they praise the prison. This acts as the first alarming sign that the Phantom Thieves are not reforming the hearts of the corrupt, but are unwittingly playing into the big plan of the conductor who desires the complete removal of society's chaotic elements, which these targets embody. What appears to be even more alarming is that, much unlike how a Palace built by the public is supposed to be, the Depths' security is surprisingly, highly ordered and structured, further implying that a higher power was behind it. It's said that there is also a "Quarantine Cell" for the "most dangerous inmate." In reality, the quarantine cell is actually the Velvet Room, and the most dangerous inmate is the protagonist himself.

The party makes their final descent to the bottom most floor, where the Shrine of the Treasure is located. The moment the party enters the area, the protagonist will be permanently locked from accessing previous areas or facilities until Yaldabaoth's defeat. Once inside, the Treasure first remains silent, then prepares to attack. As they fight it, the inmates surrounding the treasure begin to yell at the party to stop attacking "their Holy Grail," helping it to fully regenerate. After the first regeneration, it starts to talk, announcing to the group that the public gives their desires to it so they will receive the ruin they yearned for. The Grail proceeds to fight the party as they fruitlessly hamper it draining from the will of the people. For each time it starts draining from the inmates, it glows in an increasingly golden sheen, until its surface becomes bright gold. At this point that it was made clear that the Grail was no ordinary treasure, but is also the true master of Mementos who manipulates the public to do his bidding. As the inmates surrounding the Grail begin to chant in an extremely deranged manner, he tells the party that their attempts to reform are pointless, and ruin shall befall the ignorant masses, before proceeding to expel them back to the real world.

After returning back to Shibuya, the real world begins fusing with Mementos, transforming it into an apocalyptic wasteland, creating the Qliphoth World. The television screens in Shibuya appear with static screens just like at the entrance to Mementos, and the enormous skeletons seen in the Depths overshadows the district, along with a blood-red sky and continual droplets of red-colored rain. At the halfway point onthe Path to the Holy Grail (which alsoconsists of the skeletal structure, with blackbones jutting from it, along with black and red buildings similar to the prison cells in the Depths), the skywill becomedark gold to represent the distortions growing stronger. The entrance to the Holy Grail Shrine is at the topmost area of the path. The Holy Grail deliberately manifests the Qliphoth World into the real world for the sole reason of proving humanity's ignorance towards ruin, expecting that the ignorant masses will never see the obvious destruction happening to their city.

The public is completely oblivious to its appearance in the real world and only those who had formed a fully-maxed outConfidant with the protagonist can notice the changes. Due to the Holy Grail manipulating the cognition of the masses to believe that the Phantom Thieves do not exist, one by one, starting from Futaba and ending with the protagonist, the party vanishes from the real world, writhing in pain, but are actually transported into the Velvet Room, where the true identity of the Grail is unmasked impersonating as Igor. "Igor" orders Caroline and Justine to execute the protagonist, but they found that they cannot be in good shape fighting him. Realizing that the Igor was fake, they tell the protagonist to perform a guillotine fusion that turns them back into their original form, Lavenza and the two confront and expose the Holy Grail/fake Igor. The Holy Grail then gives the protagonist a chance to join him and gain fame to restore everything back to normal, but makes him a terrorizing force in the city where people lack free will and his teammates presumably still imprisoned in the Velvet Room for eternity. Should the protagonist accept the offer, the Grail will double confirm for him, and if he has confirmed to do so anyway, it will result in a bad ending, but not before Lavenza expresses her dismay and disappointment at the protagonist, believing he had undone her master's wish in making this decision.

If he refuses, the Holy Grail, after proclaiming the denial as an irredeemable act of foolishness, will depart and release the real Igor, whor*turns to continue his duties and lets the protagonist free his teammates which were confined in special cells and had their spirits broken from the devastation of their world along with their nonexistence. While all of the protagonist's teammates are initially apathetic and reluctant to rebel against the Holy Grail and became no different from the other prisoners, he manages to convince them not to give up, thus reignitingtheir will of rebellion. Once returning to the Velvet Room's main hall, Morgana appears as well, and it was revealed that the Velvet Room had beenfused with Mementos when it wascaptured and infiltrated, and Morgana was a special entity created by Igor to guide the protagonist against the evil god moments before the Velvet Room's compromise. It turns out the Grail was conducting an experiment on humanity to see if Goro Akechi's desire to destroy and recreate the world was stronger, or the protagonist's will to stand against the world's ruin was stronger. Should the protagonist win, the Grail was supposed to undo the ruin as if it never happened. In reality, it never intended to let hold of humanity, because he believes that humanity is a hopeless cause, that they do not deserve living in freedom for their ignorance (for example, unconditionally supporting Shido to rule over Japan even if they knew his sheer evil) unlike Igor who has high hopes on them, and foresaw a trickster descending to undo the ruin. The Grail as a result, approached the protagonist who had the potential as the trickster Igor foresaw and acted as if it were the real Igor, only to cast him into despair by manipulating the public into denying his "reform." In other words, the encounter with Shido that resulted in the protagonist's probation is just a farce for him to have someone to toy with, and he planned on mocking humanity by manipulating them to unconditionally entrust their futures to Shido, then removing the protagonist using the public after Shido's fall to capitalize on their ignorance. Furthermore, the Grail's decision to remove the protagonist also stems from that he finally saw him as a threat, presumably after the previous confrontation against him. The "rehabilitation" often spouted by the false Igor is also an excuse to keep tabs on the protagonist, and Lavenza rejected that notion from the get-go.

Upon escape, the party finds themselves in the Qliphoth World, and they begin the ascent to take down the Grail. The door that they escape from wasrevealed to be the same as the one found in the Depths; if the protagonist turns their back and views the door, it has the label "VELVET PRISON" on top of it.Like Caroline before her, Lavenza remains at the start of the area, providing free healing when needed, as the protagonist can no longer access any other parts of the real world until they finish.

The Shadows in the Qliphoth World take the form of white, red and golden (only the four Archangels have golden appearances)mechanical angels that wear featureless faceplates as masks. These Shadows are unique as their real faces are white and shaped like their masks, and their eyes do not glow red when their masks are pulled off. Once escaping from the Velvet Room, there-arrest deadline for the Depthsis replaced with the sign for the Day of Reckoning.

During the ascent, the Thieves will confront the four archangels before the final battle against the Holy Grail commences. While being Shadows, these Archangels act in a way similar to their original Shin Megami Tensei counterparts. For each Archangel they defeat, the cognition of the masses awakens and the people of Tokyo become more aware of their surroundings, panicking as all electronic appliances and radio equipment such as phones refuse to function, along with a few people starting to vanish, much to their horror.

The party finally makes itto the Holy Grail who is still impersonating Igor, but he quickly drops off his guise. During the fight, the group severs the ties between the Grail and the will of the people, preventing it from healing. However, after it is defeated, the Grail emerges from the temple and reveals the rest of its body submerged under it, with the wings wrapped around the grail extending and becoming its halo. The Holy Grail reveals itself to be actually Yaldabaoth, the God of Control. He reveals himself to be an administrator of the collective unconsciousness and claims that rehabilitation is useless as the public spread indolent thoughts that will drive themselves to their demise if he does not take over them. The party denies him, calls his experiment a rigged game and challenges him to one final confrontation.

Despite their efforts, Yaldabaoth's Rays of Control knocks them back, seemingly rendering him victorious. However, Morgana now makes an announcement to the public and tells them to cheer the Phantom Thieves. The public at first were doubtful but began to cheer them on as Yuuki Mishima encourages them, bursting the Phantom Thieves' popularity from 0% to 100% in an instant. The protagonist's confidants unanimously support him and his teammates and they cheer them on. The reverse manipulation of the masses' cognition allows a comeback, and the protagonist awakens Arsène into Satanael who finishes a shocked Yaldabaoth with one Sinful Shell. Yaldabaoth ruefully acknowledges Igor's claims and reverts back into the lifeless Holy Grail, cementing the Phantom Thieves' final victory and first true rebellion.

After the Holy Grail and its true form Yaldabaoth, the God of Control, is defeated, Mementos dissipates and Tokyo returns to its former state as if the destruction never happened. The Metaverse is sealed from the real world and Mementos is exiled from reality forever. Due to the masses being liberated from its control, they were more willing to speak of Shido's crimes and are willing to support the protagonist's release from juvenile hall afterwards. However, the disappearance of Mementos comes with the side effect that Morgana will disappear due to his existence being tied with it, but due to him forever being in the Thieves' hearts, he returns to the real world as a normal house cat.

Treasure[]

The Holy Grail that functions as the "Public's Treasure" is not an inanimate object unlike the others, but its true master and the instigator of all events within the first nine months of the game, born from humanity's desire of perfect order. Therefore, it deliberately implants chaotic elements within society only to use two teenagers, the protagonist and Goro Akechi, to remove these elements while the teenagers remove one or the another. The Grail would then remove the winner of the game from existence and manipulate the masses' cognition to outright surreal degrees so he can rationalize himself as the perfect god to rule over them.

Depths of Mementos (1)

Once its true form, Yaldabaoth is defeated, the inanimate treasure, a smalllifeless form of the Holy Grail appears within it. Once it istaken, the Qliphoth World is removed from the surface of Tokyo while Morgana vanishes temporarily, only to find himself back in the real world as a normal house cat, and return to the group months later or immediately depending on the ending.

Persona 5 Royal[]

Main article: Path of Da'at

In Royal, search objects are added to the Depths, and several areas to use the grappling hook to find treasure chests are added. Notably, the Depths of Mementos is the only major dungeon in the game to not have any Will Seeds at all.

After defeating Yaldabaoth, the Depths of Mementos are left destroyed. Upon returning to Mementos, available from January 13th, instead of leading to the depths, past the Path of Iweleth is the Shrine of the Holy Grail, which has been compressed into the Hall of the Grail. An escalator ascends upwards into the Path of Da'at, which becomes the ninth path and true ending of Mementos.

Notes:

  • Torn King of Desire and Dominion may manifest as Disaster Shadows.
  • Red Shadows manifest as Abaddon. It has no weaknesses nor can it be affected by Physical or Gun attacks, so it is advised to use Down Shot to recruit it if one wishes to.
  • This area cannot be visited again even after re-unlocking Mementos during January 14. If the protagonist missed any Personas from this Palace, he may recruit them in the Path of Da'at.
  • If the protagonist is ambushed by a Savage Shadow (Abbadon), it will be accompanied by a pair of Chernobog.

Trivia[]

  • The Depths of Mementos, like all other Palaces, symbolizes one of the Seven Deadly Sins-in its case, Sloth or Apathy. Theologically, Sloth is the most complex of the sins, encompassing many traits. However, the embodiment of sloth in this game manifests itself as cowardice (evil born of fear), regression (relapsing from rationality and ideological advancement), ignorance (The belief that one is superior or right regardless of the cutting truth), apathy (a lack of interest and enthusiasm because it felt like that one wasn't affected by it) and despair (disaffection from life motivating selfishness and abandonment of moral and ethical duty). Apathy, also known as Acedia in Latin, is the neglect to take care of something that one should do. It is depression without joy, and is related to melancholy (symbolized by Maruki in Royal), although Apathy itself describes the behavior, and melancholy suggests the emotion producing it. In early Christian thought, Apathy (Acedia) was regarded as a willful refusal to enjoy the goodness of God, and was also considered a refusal to help others in time of need. This is demonstrated when Tokyo was under varying degrees of Yaldabaoth's control, where its denizens display various aspects of sloth. Yaldabaoth capitalizes on these distortions and manipulations to rationalize that he is the only one capable of guiding them by strangling off their free will, because for him, freedom results in all of these aspects and will bring forth ruin, completely ignorant that he is engineering all of these events into motion in the first place:
    • Do not stand up or try to escape their oppressors as they were being trampled over by their high-profile mentors such as Kamoshida and Madarame. (Cowardice)
    • Unanimously and irrationally support Shido's campaign regardless of how he will most certainly turn Japan into a nationalist dictatorship and how terrible he actually is a leader for them, because they were led to think that he was the only viable candidate. (Regression)
    • Despite having been sown the seeds of doubt once their illusion of Shido being a high and mighty ruler that can steer Japan to the right path begins to crack as Shido's heart got changed and he confesses that he is actually a despicable and ignorant oaf, instead of searching for genuinely viable candidates, was more worried about a Japan without Shido as their guide. (Despair)
    • When the protagonist survives the interrogation, the conspiracy was so confident that the protagonist was disposed of, that they never bothered to look for a corpse. To the public, the protagonist committed suicide and the Phantom Thieves disbanded, and Shido will soon steer them to a golden age.Even when the protagonist personally appeared in front of Shido, he himself did not notice any abnormalities or even recognize himat all despite the protagonist being poorly disguised. (Ignorance)
    • When Yaldabaoth unleashes his control plan for earnest, was led into believing that Shido's heart wasn't changed and he has a chance for comeback, that the Phantom Thieves did not exist and the Qliphoth World manifesting in the real world is completely natural. (Ignorance)
    • As the Phantom Thieves make way into Mementos' core, it's also revealed that the Shadow Selves that had inhabited Mementos have been willingly imprisoned by Yaldabaoth, choosing to let him dictate the future rather than allowing fallible humans to make their own decisions. Furthermore, after the Grail begins to manifest Mementos into the surface world, none of them care about the obvious distortions occurring among them and believed the Phantom Thieves are non-existent unless they personally return to the Qliphoth World and made themselves seen, and that nothing is wrong with the Qliphoth World until Yaldabaoth's Archangel Shadows are destroyed. (Apathy)
  • The Qliphoth is the "Tree of Evil" in Kabbalah or Gnosis, and the polar opposite of the Sefirot, being portrayed as an upside down Sefirot. It represents all impurities and acts as a "shell" for humanity to prevent them from accessing the Sefirot's enlightenment, as well as its Shadow. This is portrayed by how Yaldabaoth is not god, but merely a highly powerful Shadow passing himself as the high most god to forcefully make humanity accept his totalitarian rule as the sole answer towards ruin. Furthermore, in Royal, the party is only allowed access to Maruki's Palace (which appears to be based on the Sefirot) and the Path of Da'at once the Grail is removed, metaphorically proving that Yaldabaoth is preventing humanity's enlightenment.
  • The Room of the Holy Grail resembles a Panopticon, a prison designed by Jeremy Bentham, where the prisoners are always visible but never completely sure or aware they are under observation.
  • If one pays attention to the walls of the Prison of Regression, they can notice that its walls have butterfly patterns. Furthermore, completing a tile puzzle turns the light of the activation panel, which has the mark, blue. Blue butterflies also spew out upon breaking containers within the Prison of Regression. This foreshadows that the Velvet Room is compromised as the base of Yaldabaoth's operations. Furthermore, if one attempts to look at the full-scale map while rescuing the teammates in the Velvet Room, the location will be stated as the Qliphoth World. On top of that, the door that the Phantom Thieves leave the Velvet Room from, which is seen in Shibuya Station Square, possesses the name "Velvet Prison."
  • If the protagonist dies in the Qliphoth World, a unique game over screen will be triggered, with a new Game Over message and Lavenza and the real Igor will be inside the Velvet Room instead of the former residents. Lavenza expresses disbelief and despair for the protagonist's death and Igor senses a calamity drawing close. He is then given the option to restart the boss battle if applicable, restart from the Shibuya Station Square or the Shrine Entranceor return to the title screen.
  • The four minibosses of the Qliphoth World,Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel consist of the Personas needed to fuse Michael, including Michael himself.
  • Unused files in the game indicate that it was intended to have a bad ending for failing to complete the Mementos Depths before the deadline or re-arrest. This unused bad ending is near-identical to other pre-Shido deadline bad endings, although the police officers congratulate the protagonist for having been "chosen by god" and he is now an inmate for all eternity. Sojiro wishes that he could be an inmate and sighs that the world is already in ruin, after the police say mankind will eventually face ruin, which illustrates the people being distorted by the Holy Grail.
Depths of Mementos (93)
  • The music for Mementos Depths is used for the bad ending credits roll for Persona 5. It also uses similar choruses as "Tokyo Daylight," furthering the connection that Mementos is controlling Tokyo.
  • This is the only dungeon where Morgana's ultimate Persona,Mercurius, is playable. This is due to the fact that hisConfidantmaxes out on the evening of December 23rd. In Royal, Mercurius can also be used inthe battle againstCendrillon, which is officially the final battle before merging withZorroto becomeDiegoon January 10th.
  • In the third semester, the occupied blood-red prison cells found in the Depths' Holy Grail Shrine becomes turquoise and stand empty, to reflect how the masses have become content with their ideal realities, and are enlightened so that they do not wish to be shackled in the Prison of Acedia anymore.
  • The Shadows in the Qliphoth World during a Hold Up refer to Yaldabaoth as "His Excellency" or "Your Excellency," which symbolizes how Yaldabaoth hadbecome the God of Control by the masses' wishes. This title is thenused by a Guard Captain in Maruki's Palace before it is confronted, to portray how Maruki has taken over the role of the false god.
