What is death in spiritual sense? ›

For theosophists, spiritual death stems from sinfulness, and equals the death of the soul, or separation between one's higher and lower nature, or between the soul and the body.

Researchers dedicated to understanding the spiritual needs of the dying have described several important goals of spiritual care. These include hope, meaning, forgiveness, love, reconciliation, gratitude, awe, humility and surrender.

According to the doctrine of original sin, all people have a sinful nature and thus commit sin, and are thereby spiritually dead. Those who have faith in Jesus Christ are thereafter made spiritually alive. The unbeliever's physical death, subsequent resurrection, and final judgment is followed by the second death.

Spiritual death is separation from God. The scriptures teach of two sources of spiritual death. The first source is the Fall, and the second is our own disobedience. Spiritual death can be overcome through the Atonement of Jesus Christ and by obedience to His gospel.

Many dictionaries define death as “the extinction or cessation of life” or as “ceasing to be.” As life itself is notoriously difficult to define—and as everyone tends to think of things in terms of what is known—the problems in defining death are immediately apparent.
