    Interviewing with Us:

If you want to learn more about our approach to interviewing, our guide to preparing for an interview can help you put your best foot forward.

A successful hiring process often includes an application review, ,conversations with your references, and, finally, an offer. We may also ask you to provide a writing sample or code sample, and to complete a case study. Depending on the role, your process may differ slightly.

Return

The specifics of your interviews—the number of people you meet with, and for how long—depend on which role you’ve applied to, but we’ll be mindful of your time. If applying for more than one role, you should anticipate potentially interviewing with multiple groups of interviewers. Please let us know if you have any scheduling considerations, time constraints, or deadlines from other processes.

Phone Interviews

Find a quiet location with good reception. Please let your interviewer know if you’re having difficulty hearing them.

Please be a few minutes early so you have time to settle in. Technical glitches can happen; we encourage you to test your setup ahead of time, but don’t hesitate to let your interviewer know if you’re having any difficulties connecting.

Wear what makes you comfortable. We don’t have a dress code for interviewees (or employees).

Tip: Consider having something nearby to take notes on during your conversations.

The Work: Our Teams

We’re hiring interns to join groups that span the breadth of our firm:

  • Interns work in the Office of the Chief Operating Officer (COO), Corporate Development, Human Capital, Investor Relations, Legal & Compliance, Risk, Treasury, and other groups. These groups help the firm evaluate complex business questions: e.g., how market volatility impacts profitability, how to expand a strategy in a new geography, how competitor returns covary with market factors, how to assess different indicators of talent, how to gauge investor demand elasticity, how to understand the impact of proposed regulation, how different risk measures behave in a financial crisis, how to optimize financing for our funds, and many others.

  • Interns work in Asset-Backed, Corporate Credit, Discretionary Macro, Energy, Fundamental Equities, Renewable Energy, and other discretionary strategies. These strategies benefit from a highly rigorous and process-driven approach, while relying primarily on human analysis to discover, diligence, and pursue attractive investment opportunities.

  • Interns work in Equities, Futures, and other systematic strategies. These strategies deploy quantitative and computational techniques, in combination with a sophisticated technology platform, that have been developed over the life of our firm. Systematic teams develop new tools for the analysis of financial instruments; form, test, and validate hypotheses to try to identify persistent market inefficiencies; and design and implement other investment process innovations.

  • Interns work in Client Application Engineering, Information Security, Program Management, Quant Systems, and Web Engineering. Systems administrators manage, support, and automate enterprise technology including our storage and clustered computing solutions. Systems technologists design and develop our global technology infrastructure including application engineering, database infrastructure, and web development.

4.4.5

Enrichment

In addition to having access to the wide range of resources available to full-time employees such as our employee affinity groups, you’ll take part in an extensive intern development program, including training, speakers, and planned (virtual) social activities.

Below are some of our recent speakers:

  • Sir Angus Deaton, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences and Professor of Economics and International Affairs, Emeritus at Princeton University, on “The Great Escape: Health, Wealth, and the Origins of Inequality”
  • Quanquan Gu, an assistant professor of computer science at UCLA, on researching epidemic models guided by machine learning for COVID-19 forecasts
  • César Hidalgo, chair of the Artificial and Natural Intelligence Institute at the University of Toulouse and former director of MIT’s Collective Learning group, on global economic inequality
  • Gabby Rivera, author of the Marvel comic book America, on the link between diversity and creativity

You’ll also get to explore the world beyond our offices through private museum tours, food outings, and firm-sponsored music and film festivals.

4.4.4

The Work: Real Projects

As an intern, you’ll work individually and in teams to tackle complex projects that directly influence the firm’s business decisions.

Below are some examples of past intern projects:

  • Developing and presenting a recommendation on an information-security hardware company; performing thematic research on work-from-home trends (Fundamental Research Analyst Intern)
  • Reviewing macro-level conditions in an emerging market country and understanding the drivers of its currency; exploring the impact of electric vehicles and battery technologies on global power markets (Proprietary Trader Intern)
