A contract raising the wages of Disney workers was approved Wednesday. The conference center erupted with cheers when the results were read. Many people were thrilled with the result and happy the negotiations are over. They say these new terms will make a big difference in many people's lives. "Shining example of what we can do when we work together," a Disney worker said. Under the new contract, current Disney cast members will make $18 an hour and new cast members will make $17 an hour. That's $2 more per hour than before, a wage increase Tiara Moton says will change people's lives, including her own. "It's been a struggle, especially being a single mom. So to now be in a situation where I can have a bit of relief, I can enjoy life a little bit without having to worry about paying rent," Moton said. The contract also provides at least $5.50 in raises over five years and annual pay increases every year of the contract. New parents will be given eight weeks of paid child bonding leave. It's time Moton says she wishes she could have had with her daughter. "Trying to support a newborn, it was a lot. I'm happy to know that something I wanted so badly for myself – even though I wasn't able to get it – there are now people coming after who will get that, and there's no fight about it, there's no struggle," Moton said. Disney did not respond to our request for a comment but last week, when the tentative agreement was reached, the president of Walt Disney World Resort, Jeff Vahe released a statement saying, "Our cast members are central to Walt Disney World's enduring magic, which is why we are pleased to have reached this tentative agreement."Moton says she's going to celebrate her raise by celebrating her daughter. "I feel like I'll finally be able to celebrate her in the way she deserves," Moton said. Workers who have been a part of this movement will also be given retroactive increased pay of at least $2 more an hour, dated back to October 2022. Vahle wrote, “Our cast members have always been at the heart of the Walt Disney World experience, and we are thrilled that, with the support of the union, they have overwhelmingly approved this new five-year agreement that significantly increases wages, alongside our leading benefits program that includes affordable medical coverage and more.
