Closing a bank account in Germany is one of the most common procedures when we are abroad, whether we change banks, move to another country, or return to our home country.

In this article, I will show you how to cancel the bank account in Germany, in 2024, for the main banks that exist in the country. It should be mentioned that everything is for basic accounts. If you have any premium accounts, I will leave the links for the cancellation procedures below.

*For banks with physical offices, I recommend you to close the account personally at the office where you opened the account first. As is the case when we have an account with Sparkasse, since they are a very traditional bank.

Cancelling the account with N26

Close Sparkasse account

Documents to be submitted:

• It is important tobring another bank account number where you can transfer the remaining money in our Sparkasse current account, or to collect any debt if there is one.
• IDorpassport of the account holder.
• Bring your old EC-Karte back, if possible. If not, simply destroy it at home.

Closing a Commerbank bank account is quite simple. You can cancel the account in person at one of their many offices,by letter, or by fax. You just need to pay attention to:

• You should ensure that your account is not in the minusrange.

Commerzbank block a card

If you need to block your card with Commerzbank because you have lost it, the two fastest options are as follow:

1. On the phone - via the blocking hotline 'Sperrhotline' Contact Commerzbank by telephone. You can reach the freeblocking hotline at 0180 5 021 021. It is available 24/7.
   Have the IBAN number of the Girocard to be blocked ready.
2. Through your Commerzbank online banking
   1. Log in into your online banking
   2. In the financial overview, select your account with the associated debit card.
   3. Click on the "Manage card" ('Karteverwalten') button for the Girocard you want to block.
   4. Click on "Block card". 'Kartesperren' in German.

The procedure is like the other banks, more or less. You can cancel your current account whenever you want, free of any costs. But you can'thave a negative balance.

You have to give another bank account number, in case you still have some money left, to transfer the money into the new one.
