China Has Been Named the Least Generous Country in the World (2024)
In the 2016 World Giving Indexreport published by the Charities Aid Foundation, China was ranked the 140th most generous country out of 140 countries. In other words, China is pretty stingy on charitable aid.
The charity foundation surveyed 1,000 people in 140 countries on any charitable acts they may have done within the last month. Charitable activities included helping a stranger, donating money to charity or volunteering.
Less than a quarter of Chinese people interviewed, 24%, said they helped a stranger in the last month. In other countries, like Iraq, for example, 81% of people interviewed said they had helped someone in need.
Only 6% of Chinese people said they had donated money to charity and volunteered, ranking 138th in the world in just those two categories. Meanwhile in countries like Myanmar, 91% of people surveyed claimed they had given money to charity in the last month.
In terms of generosity, China rankedbehind Palestine, Yemen, Greece and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In 2015, China ranked 144 out of 145 in generosity. The most generous countries in the world at the top of the list are as follows:

China has the lowest Index score over the 10 years at 16% and in fact is the only country that appears in the bottom 10 for all three measures we ask about; helping a stranger, donating money and volunteering time.
Around the world, 4.2 billion people helped someone they didn't know, volunteered time or donated money to a good cause according to the Charities Aid Foundation's World Giving Index 2023. For the sixth year in a row, the world's most generous country is Indonesia.
Charity Aid Foundation conducted research on countries around the world to analyze the percentage of people who helped strangers, volunteered or donated to a charity. From 2009-2018, the United States consistently ranked number one as the most generous country in the world.
The most recent edition was published in October 2022, with Indonesia, Kenya and the United States of America ranking as the top three. Australia, New Zealand, Myanmar, Sierra Leone, Canada, Zambia, and Ukraine making up the rest of the top ten.
“The United States of America emerges as the world's most generous country over the course of the study, but the numbers belie a dip in donations in more recent years and echo what we have seen in other developed countries,” say the authors of the World Giving Index.
