On January 13, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for the entire year of 2019. The automotive industry of China was under high pressure in 2019 as it was affected by such factors as China-U.S. economic and trade frictions, adoption of stricter emission standards and NEV (new energy vehicle) subsidy cuts. The entire industry was still in the process of transformation and upgrading. Production and sales stayed within reasonable ranges thanks to the industry’s ability to rejuvenate in the second half of 2019.
Overall vehicle production in 2019 totaled 25.721 million units, reflecting a 7.5% y/y decline, while sales totaled 25.769 million units, reflecting an 8.2% y/y decline. Proportions of passenger vehicle production and sales to total vehicle production and sales reached 83.0% and 83.2%, 3.4% and 1.2% lower respectively than the proportions in 2018.
Among commercial vehicles, production in 2019 totaled 4.36 million units, reflecting a 1.9% y/y increase. Commercial vehicle sales of the entire year were 4.324 million units, reflecting a 1.1% y/y decline.
In 2019, NEV production reached 1.242 million units, reflecting a decrease of 2.3% y/y, while sales reached 1.206 million units, reflecting a decrease of 4.0% y/y.
