What is the proper way to charge a battery? ›

Leaving the battery on charge You can leave a battery/radio in the charger once charging is complete. Leaving a battery in the charger will not overcharge or damage it. You can remove a battery/radio from the charger at any time without harming the battery, the radio, or the charger.

All you need is a battery charger and an outlet. Locate your vehicle's battery terminals, verify your charger is unplugged and off, attach the charger to the battery, plug it in and turn it on, set the correct settings, and you're good to go!

You can get an approximate reading by measuring the voltage of the battery (if you have a voltmeter.) A voltage of 12.6 or 12.7 means fully charged. A voltage of 12.2 is quite low.

Can a car battery be so dead it won't jump start? That depends on the jumper cables and the car that's jumping it and your method. Yes, a battery can be too dead to charge. This can happen if the battery has been completely drained and has reached a point where it cannot hold any charge.

It can be so dead a modern smart charger will refuse to charge it. But sometimes you can jump-start it with an old dumb charger. Even if you get it going again, it's likely to be damaged and never perform like a new one though.

It is quite safe to charge the battery while the terminals are still connected. Your job is to disconnect both. However, DO NOT disconnect the positive terminal before the negative one. Doing so can cause an electrical short. Always disconnect the negative battery terminal first.
