Cashback Apps

The apps discussed here all pay you cash back on groceries. Several of them will also pay cashback on other items but our focus of this post is on saving money on groceries. Follow the links to the various programs’ websites to learn more about other potential savings they offer.

Ibotta

Ibotta is a program which pays you cashback on groceries (and more). To get started simply go to Ibotta and open an account. Then, download the app on your phone. Once in the app you can navigate through different categories and/or stores to see what offers are currently available. For each offer, you complete a small action (watch a video, take a quick survey, learn a fact, share on social media etc) to qualify for the offer. (The actions are usually very fast and take less than 30 seconds to complete.) Then, to redeem your cash, you scan the barcode of the product, snap a quick picture of your receipt and you’re done! Once the purchase is verified the cash back is added to your account. After accumulating money in your account you can cash out for gift cards or have it deposited into a paypal account.

Checkout 51

Checkout 51 is similar to Ibotta except you don’t have to complete any actions unlock the offers. To use Checkout 51 simply visit the website and open an account. Then, download and install the app on your phone. On the app you can browse through existing offers. To redeem you scan the barcode of the item, snap a picture of your receipt and submit it. Once approved the cashback will be added to your account. Once you reach a $20 threshhold (at the time of writing this) you can request a cash out in the form of a check.

SavingStar

SavingStar makes completing offers a little easier. To use SavingStar you first go to their site, SavingStar, and sign up for an account. Then, download and install the app on your phone. Once in the app, go to the store section and add stores you typically shop at. The app will prompt you to snap a picture of the store’s loyalty card. Once you scan the barcode of your store’s membership card it’s stored on your SavingStar account for future use. Next, browse the offers available on the app and select the ones you like to use. Then, when you purchase the items that match the offers and scan your store card during checkout, the offers will automatically be redeemed. If you shop at a store that doesn’t have a loyalty card you still have the option of scanning the barcode and receipt to verify your purchase. Once you’ve collected at least $5 back in cash you can request a payout in the form of a gift card, paypal or deposit to your bank account.

Shopmium

Shopmium works similarly to the other apps above. Once signing up for an account you download and install the app on your phone. After finding offers and purchasing the items, you redeem the offers by scanning the barcode and receipt. However, with Shopmium, your money back doesn’t sit in an account. Each time you redeem an offer the cashback is immediately sent to you via paypal or a bank deposit.

Snap (by Groupon)

Groupon, a popular coupon website, has started their own app which provides money back from grocery purchases. The program, called Snap, is similar to the others. To use their program you first go to the Snap website and sign up for an account. You can then download the app to your phone. You find and redeem offers by snapping pictures of barcodes and receipts. Once you accumulate $20 in savings you can request a cash out in the form of a check.

ReceiptHog

ReceiptHog is different from the other programs mentioned in a few ways. First, you don’t need to purchase specific products. The company pays you “coins” for simply snapping pictures of receipts from various stores. You earn a different amount of coins based on the total purchase price on the receipt. You can also spin the slots or complete surveys to earn bonus coins. Once you accumulate $5 worth of coins you can cash out in the form of paypal or a gift card.
